How do q***rness and disability intersect — and what does that mean for how we build community? At this Quench, we’ll explore how ableism shapes LGBTQ+-focused spaces, reflect on where our understandings of disability come from, and consider how to center access, interdependence, and collective care in our communities. We’ll be joined by Capria Berry, Director for Disability Inclusive Culture at NYU’s Moses Center, who will share insights on NYU’s institutional commitment to disability inclusion and the inherently intersectional nature of disability inclusive culture. Free lunch will be provided!

While many LGBTQ+-focused spaces are intended to feel safe and welcoming, fatphobia remains a prevalent issue within LGBTQ+ communities. This Quench will focus on how fat people are marginalized and “othered” in LGBTQ+-focused spaces and beyond. We will examine media representations of fat individuals, discuss strategies for challenging internalized and systemic fatphobia, and explore how we can work together to move toward fat acceptance and liberation. Free lunch will be provided!

In recognition of Trans Awareness Week, the LGBTQ+ Center and the Center for Multicultural Education and Programs (CMEP) are bringing a group of students to explore the Hot Peaches “You Don’t Hide Beautiful Things in Closets” archival collection, produced as a part of the Archives Onstage series by NYU Skirball and NYU’s Division of Libraries. Hot Peaches, New York’s first self-defined gay theatre company, created bold, campy performances that celebrated q***r and trans life amid decades of cultural and political hostility. Featuring materials from iconic members like Marsha P. Johnson, this visit invites students to reflect on Hot Peaches’ enduring legacy of joy, resistance, and community. Free lunch and discussion will take place following this visit!

This event is free and open to all NYU students.
