Very excited and grateful to be holding tea ceremony at NYPD Precinct 19 as part of our Tea Ceremony in the Community course this semester. Along with members of the NYPD we are also glad to have Hunter College President Nancy Cantor, Dean Erica Chito Childs, members of the Hunter administration, the Japanese Consulate, and students from the Ella Baker School in attendance!

Our teacher, Mari Abe Kole sensei, highlighted the Hunter motto “Mihi cura futuri” or “Care of the future is mine” as today’s theme, noting how harmony, respect, tranquility, and purity, the four tenets of tea ceremony, can be applied by our tea ceremony students to their own lives as future leaders!

Thank you to Ito En for providing tea for this event and supporting our tea ceremony courses!

㊗️ On August 28th, 2025, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Japan announced the recipients of the Foreign Minister's Commendations for 2025, which included the Japanese Program at Hunter College.

🏫 Since launching its first Japanese language class in 1986, the program has opened doors for countless students to explore the Japanese language and culture. In 2023, the program proudly became the first official Japanese major offered within the CUNY system.

This honor reflects the tireless dedication of the faculty, the unwavering support of the community, and the enthusiasm of all the students to chose to learn about Japan over the years. Congratulations Hunter College Japanese Program ハンター大学日本語・日本文化学科 ! 👏

The Hunter Japanese Program is again excited to be a part of this year's Japan Village Summer Festival on Saturday, August 23rd in Brooklyn! We are looking for student volunteers to help the Hunter Japanese program represent! This is not only a great experience, but it will connect you with many of the NYC Japanese businesses.
