On May 18, New York Law School is honored to welcome New York City Council Speaker Julie Menin as Keynote Speaker and Honorary Degree recipient at our 134th Commencement. For the third consecutive year, Professor Anna G. Cominsky ’05 and the Criminal Defense Clinic, accompanied by NYLS Professor Emeritus Frank Bress, welcomed 22 law students and Professor Carsten Momsen from Freie Universistat of Berlin (Free University Berlin), for an immersive academic experience.

NYLS Criminal Defense Clinic students led a session introducing their international peers to the fundamentals of New York criminal law and procedure and engaging in meaningful cross-cultural dialogue. The experience extended beyond the classroom, as NYLS students accompanied the visiting group to the courthouse, where they collectively observed arraignments and a trial.

Back on campus, NYLS students helped facilitate a structured debrief. The week culminated in Professor Cominsky’s Advocacy of Criminal Cases course: NYLS students demonstrated their courtroom skills, while the visiting students—having learned about jury selection earlier in the week—served as mock jurors. This collaborative exercise provided NYLS students with a dynamic, practice-oriented opportunity to refine their litigation techniques before an engaged, international audience.

The entire NYLS community mourns the passing of Eliot Engel ’87, who served in the United States Congress representing the Bronx and Westchester for 32 years. Congressman Engel was born in the Bronx and raised in public housing, and after college became a teacher and guidance counselor in New York City public schools. He was elected to the New York State Assembly in 1977, and while serving, attended NYLS’s part-time Evening Division program, graduating in 1987. After his election to Congress in 1988, he was a highly productive member, eventually becoming the Chair of the House Foreign Affairs Committee, an achievement of a lifetime for a champion of human rights and extending his global impact.

We send our deepest condolences to his family, friends, former colleagues, and classmates.

Engel represented parts of Westchester County and the north Bronx in the House of Representatives for over 30 years from 1989-2021.
