English Language Institute - College of Staten Island/CUNY The English Language Institute office at CSI is open from Monday through Friday 9-5pm Our course of study is designed to challenge and engage students.

The English Language Institute (ELI) of the Center for Global Engagement has offered innovative academic programs for students learning English as a Second Language since the late 1970’s. It belongs to the City University of New York (CUNY) through the College of Staten Island. Students are immersed in the language, culture, and ethnicity of New York City. Classes range from beginner to the advanced level.

Project-based learning? Our students visited the American Museum of Natural History in Manhattan with a mission. They had to collect ideas and photos for their end of unit oral presentation. Last Friday they gave speeches about the cosmos, the dinosaurs, and the natural world. Science vocabulary is useful in many professions, and they learned it through this project.

We’ve made amazing progress in the last three weeks because we’ve got a talented professor who cares, Patrick Alvarez, AND students who are not afraid to put in the work. Our students are learning the English they need to move forward and return to the careers they had in their home countries. They’re building confidence in their communication skills. They’re doing it quickly because they’re studying 4 days straight, 9:00 - 2:30 PM, Tuesdays-Fridays. That’s 18 hrs. a week! Invest in yourself and join our university certificate program on October 27th, or January 12th.

During the summer, we welcomed students from Chuo University in Japan to New York City for an immersive experience learning about international business in NYC while also experiencing American culture firsthand. 🗽
 
From exploring Manhattan to visiting Mitsubishi and the Japanese Chamber of Commerce and Industry, our students had the chance to learn, connect, and experience the city beyond the classroom.
 
We’re so happy we got to be part of their summer in NYC and hope they left with new connections, stronger English skills, and plenty of great memories! 😎

A curriculum is more than classroom happenings at ELI. We plan our monthly events to provide students with multiple speaking opportunities, with ideas about things to do in NYC, and with trips that build into their projects. It all adds up in the little yellow boxes - on those days our students take all they experience and learn and share it via presentations.

What does commitment look like? These students are it - they went to class three nights a week all of August and September. They passed their exams and earned their certificates.
