New York City Civic Engagement Program at Barnard College

New York City Civic Engagement Program at Barnard College Barnard College was founded to support and promote women as leaders, innovators, and scholars in their communities.

Leaders must understand how they are linked with their community, requiring knowledge of social justice, training in community-based research, experience with activism, and an understanding that service is both an honor and a responsibility. NYCCEP serves as the training ground for a new generation of strong leaders. Whatever field our students are interested in, NYCCEP provides the tools and reso

urces to integrate civic engagement into their academic and professional work. We believe that NYCCEP and Barnard College are helping to build a new reality: one in which all members of communities, both local and global, are prepared to work together to solve complex problems and create a happier, healthier, and more just world. Our programs include:

BARNARD REACH OUT
Days of service for students to engage with peers & learn about NYC beyond Barnard’s gates

EXTENDED BARNARD REACH OUT
A 10-week program that provides education about social issues and an opportunity to serve

CIVIC ENGAGEMENT FELLOWSHIP

CIVIC ENGAGEMENT SPEAKER SERIES
Panels of Barnard alumnae who have integrated civic engagement into their work—in and out of the public sector

CIVIC ENGAGEMENT TRAININGS

students as tutors in local educational institutions

Leadership Center, the Alternative Break Program, and more—all to offer additional resources to Barnard leaders

Have you ever considered leading a tour on campus? Now is your chance! Alianza, the pan-Latino affinity group on campus, has created the wonderful program Bridge2Brilliance. B2B brings together students from all schools, majors, and class years - especially those identifying as students of color, first-gen students and/or low income students - and encourages them to lead local school kids around campus so that they too can imagine their potential as Barnard College and Columbia University students.

Ishrat is a sophomore majoring in Political Economics with a concentration in sociocultural Anthropology. She hails from Boston, MA and loves exploring NYC's halal carts and coffee shops in her free time. She joined NYCCEP primarily because NYCCEP Fellows challenge broader societal notions of what is commonly accepted through activism, using their advocacy and political engagement to question and challenge the fundamental pillars of society, forcing themselves and the members of their community to venture beyond their comfort zones to effectively establish and bring modes of social change. Last fall, Carmen Yulín Cruz, mayor of San Juan, Puerto Rico, garnered the most attention from American media outlets that she has earned to date in either of her two terms. This comes as no surprise during the age in which anyone that engages in debate with President Trump seems to earn a headline or two — or at least a subtweet. [ 418 more words ]
