This year’s theme is AI and Humanity, and we are excited to explore how artificial intelligence can advance healthcare while preserving equity, trust, and human-centered prevention and care. We look forward to hearing from our panelists and from our very own Dr. Thalia Porteny, who will be moderating. See you at the Conference!

VPHS is very excited to announce that they are hosting our first ever case competition! Students will take on the role of New York State policymakers strategizing how to best support the health of their constituents through policy, programming, and community interventions. They would love for you to join!

Teams of 2 to 4 students are allowed to register, and cash prizes of $500, $300, and $200 will be given to 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place, respectively. Students from all departments are encouraged to participate, and refreshments will be provided for the in-person portion of the case competition.

To compete, please make sure to register for the event on CampusGroups and sign up on the Google Form (see below and in Linktree) before Friday, April 10. The case will be emailed to teams on Friday, April 10, two weeks before the competition date of Friday, April 24. Teams will use these two weeks to read the case, brainstorm their solution and build their slide decks, which will be presented to a panel of faculty and alumni. Hope to see you there!

Happy Black History Month! As the month comes to a close, we’re proud to spotlight one of our incredible faculty members, Professor Heather Butts, whose work bridges history, public health, leadership, and community impact.
Professor Butts holds degrees from Princeton University (B.A., History), St. John’s University School of Law (J.D.), Harvard University (M.P.H.), and Columbia University Teachers College (M.Ed.). She is an Associate Professor in the Department of Health Policy and Management at Columbia Mailman School of Public Health, where she teaches courses including Untold Stories and serves as Faculty Course Lead for the Leadership program.
Beyond the classroom, she is the co-founder of H.E.A.L.T.H for Youths, Inc., a nonprofit supporting more than 7,000 students annually through college access, public health initiatives, career preparation, financial literacy, and community programs.
A published scholar and author, her work explores African American medical history, leadership, and health policy — including books such as African American Medicine in Washington, D.C. and Healing Civil War Veterans in New York and Washington, D.C.
We’re grateful for Professor Butts’ dedication to education, equity, and inspiring the next generation of public health leaders. 💙
