Get ready for “Natasha, Pierre & the Great Comet of 1812.”

Inspired by a scandalous slice of Tolstoy’s War and Peace, Dave Malloy’s electrifying musical brings Natasha and Pierre into a world of longing, chaos, reinvention, and hope.

This production reimagines the story through the energy of a late-night Moscow rave in the early 1990s, with Malloy’s bold electropop score driving the journey.

Directed and choreographed by Phil Colgan, with musical direction by Angela Ortiz.

Working Artists at Sands 🎭

Production Design and Stage Management students worked alongside Clinical Professor of Design Matsy Stinson and professional artists on the world premiere of “The Great Dictionary of the Yiddish Language” at the YIVO Institute in New York City.

The chamber opera, with music by Pulitzer Prize finalist Alex Weiser and a libretto by Ben Kaplan, explores the true story of two linguists who set out to create a comprehensive Yiddish dictionary in the aftermath of the Holocaust. Presenting the work at YIVO, where that history began, made the experience even more meaningful.

For our students, it was a chance to step into an experience unique to Sands and see how their training translates across live performance.

Our working artists include: Georgia Parry ’28, Kissel J. Barrantes ’28, Ryan Birnbaum ’27, May Harris ’27, Lily Isaacson ’28, and Stage Management students Raine Downes ’27 and Thomas Baia ’28, who were part of the production.

Director: Rebecca Miller Kratzer
Stage Manager: Sarah Herdrich
Scenic Design: Michael Bennett Lewis
Lighting Design: Stacey Boggs
Projection Design: Camilla Tassi
Costume Design: Matsy Stinson
