Very excited to announce the arrival of the newest book in Oxford Philosophical Concepts. Karolina Hübner's wonderful Human: A History could not come at a better time. It illuminates "how our self-understanding as human evolved across time and place--from ancient Greek, classical Chinese, and medieval Arabic accounts of human nature to contemporary evolutionary theory." Great papers by top scholars. Thanks to Karolina who did a fab job and appropriately dedicated book to Charles Mills, who talked to me long ago about what might be included in such a book, and contributed a Reflection on Race and the Human. At 494 pages, it's a deal at $39.95!

What does it mean to be human? Is there something that makes us distinct from computers, other great apes, Martians, gods? Is there philosophical, ethical, or political value in continuing to think in terms of a common human nature? Or should we rather throw this concept into the dustbin of history?...

Very excited about the newest book in Oxford Philosophical Concepts, WORLD SOUL, ed. by the fab scholar James Wilberding (Berlin). It's a metaphysical notion that has played a central role in the history of philosophy, but has not been properly understood. Just thinking about the brightness of the World Soul, forced me to get out my sunglasses. 🙀 Who wants to do a review of it?

Restrictions due to coronavirus have caused severe anguish for everyone. But the pain is exponentially worse for those hundreds of thousands of women and men trapped in U.S. state and federal prisons.
