Grade 6 students put the Design Thinking Process to work in CSE, designing, testing, and refining an engineering challenge in teams.

Using only six index cards and tape, they had to build the tallest structure possible while supporting the weight of a textbook. As they tested their designs, they adjusted their approach based on what worked and what didn’t. Some structures held all four textbooks, while one supported four textbooks plus several additional classroom items. The activity introduced students to the iterative problem-solving process they will continue to develop throughout CSE.

Book Fair week is here! Lower School students kicked things off with Carole Boston Weatherford, an acclaimed children’s author and poet whose books have earned a Newbery Honor and a Coretta Scott King Author Award. She shared a message about persistence, encouraging the boys to keep trying and look for ways to improve.

There’s more ahead as families “Unleash Your Reading Powers” in support of Browning’s libraries: Parents Preview Night on Friday features parent authors and Browning educators in conversation over cocktails, followed by Family Day on Sunday and classroom visits next Monday.

Introducing Browning Cares! ❤️ Next month, on Saturday, Nov. 14, our families are invited to take part in our first school-wide day of service, with volunteer opportunities across NYC supporting local organizations.

Help maintain Morningside Park, sort and pack fresh produce with Grassroots Grocery, prepare meals with Manna of Life, care for rescued animals with the Wildlife Freedom Foundation, or help clean up our Upper East Side neighborhood with the East 60s Neighborhood Association.

Lower School Buddy Bonding!⁠

One of our most treasured traditions is underway! Kindergarteners and their Grade 4 buddies are beginning to get to know one another through shared activities. For our youngest boys, their older buddies become familiar faces, mentors, and friends. For the Grade 4 boys, it’s an opportunity to lead by example and build connections across Lower School.

Basketball Open Runs Are Back!

Parents, alumni, and faculty are invited to the first run of the season on Tuesday, October 20, from 6-8 p.m. in the Upper School building. Open runs are for moderate-to-advanced players—reversible jerseys will be provided. Check recent emails for registration details or contact Coach West.

Grade 9 students and senior Peer Leaders traveled to Silver Lake in Sharon, CT, for two days of team-building and connection!

Through Mountain Workshop activities and time together away from campus, the boys took on challenges, encouraged one another, and strengthened bonds across grades. Our Peer Leaders helped set the tone throughout the retreat, modeling the kindness, leadership, and sense of community that make the Browning experience distinctive.

Lower and Middle School Music Teacher Steve Fisher is taking a new musical to the Off-Broadway stage!⁠
⁠
"Elysian Fields," a new musical co-written by Mr. Fisher, will have its world premiere this month as an Equity Showcase Production. Mr. Fisher serves as the show’s composer, lyricist, and co-book writer, bringing together music, storytelling, and theater in a work that follows parallel stories set in 2016 Kentucky and the 19th century.
