On April 29th, the NYU Tandon Capstone Competition featured more than 40 teams that filled the MakerSpace Design Lab and foyer in an open showcase of prototypes and posters spanning climate resilience, public health, robotics, and beyond. More than 240 attendees engaged with teams and cast votes for the Students' Choice Award.

NYU has been selected as one of 13 teams in the inaugural cohort of the Exponentiating Mathematics (expMath) program, a newly launched initiative from the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA), the U.S. Department of Defense’s independent research arm known for funding high-risk, high-reward technologies.

The NYU team's project is led by Principal Investigator (PI) Claudio Silva, Institute Professor at NYU Tandon School of Engineering and a professor in the NYU Center for Data Science, and Co-PI Chinmay Hegde, an associate professor at NYU Tandon.

At Tandon, there's a place for everyone to find their community.

One of these organizations is the Society of Asian Scientists and Engineers — a professional organization that aims to empower Asian heritage scientists, engineers, and technologists in the United States by fostering social mixer, career development, and cultural events. This October the organization will be traveling to Seattle to attend their national conference.

Another organization is the Graduate Indian Student Association — which fosters understanding about India and her culture among the Tandon community at large, to provide an avenue to bridge the social gap among the graduate students.

Assistant Professor Elizabeth Hénaff, who uses microbes to detect and remediate pollution in the Gowanus Canal, is quoted in a feature in Atmos on cyborg botany — plants augmented with electronics to sense pollution and environmental stress — warning that even ecological technologies can perpetuate extractive thinking if the ethical framework isn't built in from the start.

Foliage augmented with electronics could one day detect pollution, monitor environmental stress, and integrate living systems into cities.

Geotechnical engineering research fellow Boules Morkos said to CBS New York that LaGuardia's location on a landfill may have contributed to the Memorial Day weekend sinkhole, noting that filled soil lacks the strength of naturally deposited soil and that finding one sinkhole raises the likelihood of more nearby.

A LaGuardia International Airport runway reopened Friday after a sinkhole forced it to close for two days.
