This case presentation narrates the close clinical process in a long-term treatment with a latency-age child. At stake are questions of aliveness and legibility in the minds of others, and in relation to the Other where each subject finds their bearings in language and social bonds. Through play, speech, and dreams, a young subject grapples with identifications, bodily differences, impasses in the mirror stage, and social belonging. As the patient traverses each of these difficulties, the clinician reflects on her pain in bearing witness, the theoretical implications of each pivot in the treatment, and her desire as an analyst to follow the movements of the unconscious.
