What if the space industry got better at telling the truth about itself?

That question sits at the center of our conversation with Dr. Paul Bate, former CEO of the UK Space Agency and one of this year's UK Space and Satellite Personality of the Year nominees.

Paul calls it “credible optimism”: making the case for what space can do while being equally clear about what we still do not know, what can fail, and what still needs to be built.

We talked about UK leadership, international relationships, new ways to do R&D in orbit, and some very big unanswered questions about space safety and human expansion beyond Earth.

Volunteer with SSPI!

SSPI works because people across the space and satellite community choose to participate. They bring their experience, their networks, their ideas, and a willingness to help someone else move forward.

There are many ways to do that through SSPI:

- Help strengthen an existing chapter, or explore building one where none exists.

- Serve as a mentor to someone developing their career in our industry.

- Contribute your expertise to an SSPI committee or program.

- Raise your hand for new volunteer opportunities as they emerge.

Tell us where you would like to contribute, what interests you, and where your experience might be useful. Then, as opportunities arise, we can invite you into the work.

Our industry grows stronger when more of us help build the community around it.

How do you build a space partnership when commercial opportunity, export controls, and national security all occupy the same negotiating table?

China’s commercial space sector has grown quickly since 2014. The legal infrastructure around it remains distributed across agencies, rules, and overlapping categories of commercial and dual-use activity.

In the new episode of Collateral Risk, we hear from Fuhua Ni, founding and managing partner of Shanghai Zenith Law Firm, about the practical consequences for companies trying to work across borders.

We discuss regulatory fragmentation, ITAR, EAR, the Wolf Amendment, a proposed CSIS report on possible areas of cooperation, and the work underway to develop an SSPI China chapter.

Fuhua brings the perspective of a commercial lawyer, dispute-resolution practitioner, and Chinese national studied in both US and Chinese law who works directly with companies and institutions navigating these questions.

Today, SSPI proudly premiered a new Better Satellite World video: People Who Work on the Water.

Far from shore, mariners carry out difficult and essential work that helps keep the world moving. Satellite technology goes with them.

This is why Better Satellite World exists: to reveal the profound good our industry does

every day, often quietly and far from public view.

We are grateful to Speedcast for sponsoring this video and sharing the story of its work with P&O Maritime Logistics. Additional support comes from Artel LLC.

Does a career need a plan, or does it need a storyline?

Early in her career, Shruti Vyas received a piece of advice that she interpreted in her own way: your career needs to carry forward a storyline.

Hmmm.

Shruti, now Head of Programmes at SES, didn't plan a path from engineering through sales, insurance, risk management and launch management to helping lead the ex*****on of IRIS². What she did intentionally was keep choosing opportunities that challenged her and added something to what she already knew.

Some of those choices took her into jobs she barely understood when she first considered them. She admits that she had to look up the meaning of “captive” when she applied for a role managing insurance captives. Years later, she agreed to work on a “secure connectivity programme” without quite knowing what she'd signed up for.

It’s a fascinating story of personal excellence, striving for self-improvement and along the way, creating something we can all look at and say, “I could try that.”

So. Could you? Do you? Would you?

In the latest Why I Serve, Shruti and I talk about that journey, what she learned bridging radically different cultures of risk during the SES-10 reusable Falcon 9 mission, what excites her about IRIS², and why she has chosen to serve on the SSPI Board.

"You never know what's going to happen on orbit, we know that right? That's kind of the given right there, it teaches you..."

Tune in to this recently released podcast episode with returning SSPI Member Sidus Space. We are joined on this episode with Carol Craig, Founder and CEO of Sidus Space and Founder and CEO of Craig Technologies

In Episode 5, Bricks, Satellites and Space Safety, Carol brings the Space Safety Economy down to the mission level: design discipline, redundancy, software-defined systems, on-orbit learning, maneuverability, data, standards and the operational choices that help a satellite keep delivering value.

One idea I’m still thinking about: safety becomes economic when customers value it as confidence, resilience and mission continuity.

Are we already seeing space safety become part of the value proposition for satellites and space services? Or are we still treating it mostly as a cost, a compliance issue or a lesson learned after failure?

The professionals who build momentum in this industry tend to be connected

In a technical industry, it is easy to assume that the work speaks for itself. Sometimes it does. But the professionals who move fastest through this industry tend to share something beyond technical skill: they are known. They have a network. They are part of a community that opens doors before those doors are posted anywhere.

SSPI is that community for the space and satellite industry. Individual membership connects you to the professionals shaping this industry across every career stage, every region, and every discipline.

As a member you have access to SSPI programs and events at member rates, exclusive member offers including conference discounts and complimentary reports, and visibility in a professional network that spans the globe. Find out what is available to you at www.sspi.org/exclusive-member-offers.

And if your company is an SSPI Corporate Member, you may already be entitled to join at no cost. Check the corporate member directory at www.sspi.org/membership-directory/corporate before you pull out your credit card.

Defense of space is also a production challenge.

Can the space industrial base turn demand into delivery? That question reaches from the Tier 1 primes to suppliers, ground systems, insurers, investors, manufacturers, and the people who make each layer work together.

At the New York Space Business Roundtable, SSPI Executive Director Tamara Bond-Williams brought together Zack Hester, Quadri Bello, Col. Tim Trimailo, David Myers, Chris Kunstadter, and Dara Panahy for a candid discussion of the capacity behind defense of space.
