CCNY Grove School of Engineering’s Yang Liu Earns Top Honor From World’s Largest Aerospace Technical Society

Dr. Yang Liu, Assistant Professor of Mechanical Engineering and an expert in experimental fluid mechanics, is one of the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics' Class of 2026 Associate Fellows. This recognition honors Dr. Liu's pioneering research and academic leadership in experimental aerodynamics and multiphase flow. The impactful contributions of his work are advancing aircraft icing mitigation, additive manufacturing, and plasma-droplet interactions.

Liu is the Director of the Experimental Aerodynamics and Multiphase Flow Laboratory (ExAM-Flow Lab) at The City College of New York (https://lnkd.in/eMQW7c-s). His research explores how liquids, gases, and plasmas interact under extreme conditions to reveal the physics that govern complex flow and heat-transfer phenomena. His work bridges fundamental science and real-world applications in areas such as aerospace safety, additive manufacturing, and energy systems.

Liu’s current research interests include plasma-droplet interactions, multiphase dynamics in additive manufacturing, shockwave-surface interactions, complex multiphase interactions driven by supersonic/hypersonic flows, aircraft icing physics and anti-/de-icing technologies, and unsteady flow dynamics in energy devices.

He obtained his PhD in aerospace engineering from Iowa State University and a BS in aerospace engineering from Beihang University in China.

Congratulations to this year’s DFI Stanley Merjan Scholarship recipients — Alexander Estrella, Authoy Khondoker, Jurgen Lala, and Chaw Nandar — recognized at the 18th Annual DFI Educational Trust Gala on Thursday, November 6, 2025.

The DFI Stanley Merjan Scholarship honors students who demonstrate excellence and promise in the deep foundations industry, carrying forward the legacy and leadership of CCNY alumnus Stanley Merjan, P.E.

A 1948 civil engineering graduate, Merjan spent most of his distinguished career with Underpinning and Foundation Skanska. He was a visionary engineer and inventor, who held 19 U.S. patents related to deep foundations and revolutionized pile driving in the New York area in the 1970s with his patented TPT (Tapered Pile Tip) system. His work quite literally laid the foundations for many of the region’s landmark projects — including JFK and LaGuardia Airports and Yankee Stadium.

Our sincere thanks to the Deep Foundations Institute Educational Trust and its supporters for continuing to honor the remarkable legacy of giants in the deep foundations industry by supporting the next generation of engineers.

Congratulations again to all of this year’s scholarship recipients.
