A small business grant is helping Tanairy Fernandez, LMHC-D, NCC, PMH-C, ’13M.S.Ed. take the next step in expanding access to mental health care on Long Island!

As founder and clinical director of Balance Mental Health Counseling in Huntington, NY, Tanairy was awarded a $20,000 small business grant and a $5,000 TV ad spot from Optimum Media. She plans to use the funding to make her facility more accessible by adding an ADA-compliant ramp.

Through her practice, this alumna provides vital bilingual care and maternal mental health support across Long Island, all while continuing to mentor current St. John's counseling interns right in her clinic.

With a career spanning leadership roles at Citibank, GE Capital, and Synchrony Financial, Margaret M. Keane ’81SJC, ’87M.B.A., ’19HON. shares her best career advice and mistakes to avoid for students and alumni.

After 16 years at Citibank US, Margaret joined GE Capital as President and CEO in 2004. In 2014, she led the initial public offering of Synchrony Financial, which became a fully independent company the following year.

Today, she serves as Executive Chair of Synchrony’s Board of Directors and as a member of St. John’s University’s Board of Trustees.

We’re proud to honor Margaret during the Twenty-Ninth Annual President’s Dinner later this month.

Which of these photos looks like the St. John’s you remember?

Opened in the Fall of 2024, the new St. Vincent Health Sciences Center houses the University’s health sciences programs, with laboratories, simulation facilities, active learning classrooms, and more.

The new center sits on the footprint of the former St. Vincent Hall, a 1958 campus fixture that spent decades housing various student communities like the Ozanam and Catholic Scholars.
