On May 28, we welcomed NYC Mayor Zohran Kwame Mamdani, students, tenant organizers, advocates, educators, and community members for a powerful conversation about housing affordability, displacement, rising rents, and the challenges facing young New Yorkers.
The event felt especially meaningful at Hostos, a college born from community and student organizing in 1968. Before the program, Mayor Mamdani met with Hostos President Dr. Daisy Cocco De Filippis, who reflected on the College’s history and its mission of creating opportunity for the South Bronx.
“I was delighted to meet with Mayor Mamdani and reaffirm how important the issues of housing and food security are in our South Bronx community,” said President Cocco De Filippis. “We are also so grateful that he recognizes the incredible value of Hostos and CUNY, and I look forward to continuing working with his administration when we meet again in June.”
Hosted by More Perfect University and the Mayor’s Office, the evening focused on students and residents sharing their experiences and asking questions directly to the Mayor.
Among them was Hostos graduate Brittany Lanzano, now a student at Lehman College and Lead Advocate with CUNY CARES. Brittany introduced attendees to the work of CUNY CARES, which helps students at Hostos, Lehman, and Bronx Community College access vital resources and support. She asked how the City’s housing agenda will help low-income students and young people in the Bronx who are struggling to afford housing today.
One of the College’s mission pillars has always been to serve as a resource for the community, and that tradition continued Thursday night in the South Bronx, where students, tenants, organizers, educators, artists, and city leaders gathered to discuss the future of New York City and the urgent need for affordable housing.
Building on those conversations, Hostos will once again serve as a civic gathering place when the NYC Rent Guidelines Board (RGB) holds its annual Bronx Public Hearing on Monday, June 8, 2026, bringing residents together to share their perspectives on housing and affordability.
