Edgar Pio Garcia, BS '26, was awarded the Fullbright-Garcia Robles Graduate Study Award to pursue his master's in Public Health in Mexico. 🌟
Born in southern New Mexico, his interest in public health was influenced by his upbringing in the small rural farming communities in Sierra County. As part of the NYU Martin Luther King Jr. Scholars Program, Edgar was introduced to environmental justice work at the Bronx River Alliance, where he mentored seven high school students exploring the impacts of air pollutants on vital members of New York City life: street vendors.
After completing his MPH, Edgar plans to strengthen his bedside nursing skills before transitioning into community and public health. Long-term, he aims to establish a network of rural health clinics in New Mexico and join the National Association of Hispanic Nurses’ congressional committee to advocate for migrant farmworkers. He hopes to launch a farm cooperative that honors New Mexico’s agricultural traditions and supports the workers who sustain them. 🧑🌾 💪
