On Thursday, October 8th at 5:30 pm in Room 3491, the Ethnomusicology Department presents an EthnoJams colloquium by Dr. Miki Kaneda entitled "Transpacific Experiments: Intermedia Art and Music in 1960s Japan," based on her recently published book of the same title.

Intermedia art—an avant-garde multimedia practice that combines sound and moving images—took root in Japan alongside other places in the 1960s. In this talk, Dr. Kaneda will provide an overview of her book, Transpacific Experiments: Intermedia Art and Music in 1960s Japan, which analyzes intermedia as a practice that gives form to errant possibilities, unfolding in spaces of the everyday, to offer nuanced insights into the global flow of ideas, influence, and discourses of appropriation. The stories of intermedia art she shares offer feminist and transnational perspectives on experimental music and art that disorient existing narratives about the experimental and political in unexpected ways.
[About Dr. Kaneda]
Miki Kaneda’s work centers on themes of transcultural movements and the entanglements of race, gender, and empire in experimental, avant-garde, and popular music. Her recent projects have also examined the connections between musical performance and labor in contemporary new music in the United States. Her book, titled Transpacific Experiments: Intermedia Art and Music in 1960s Japan was recently published by the University of Michigan Press. She has written for Jazz and Culture, The Journal of Musicology, ASAP/Journal, Twentieth-Century Music, the San Francisco Chronicle, and post.moma.org, where she was a founding co-editor. She is Associate Director of the Center for the Humanities at New York University.
