NYU Science is deeply saddened by the loss of Dr. Philip Benfey, a distinguished Professor of Biology at Duke University and a prominent Investigator at the Howard Hughes Medical Institute. Our thoughts are with his family: his wife, Elisabeth -- the love of his life-- and their two sons, Sam and Julien.

At NYU, those who knew Philip grieve the loss of a friend, a mentor, and a colleague, whose keen perspective and insightful observations reverberate as a source of scientific inspiration.

Incoming NYU Psychology Assistant Professor Esti Blanco-Elorrieta shared her thoughts on new research, published in the April issue of the journal Neurobiology of Aging and featured in the New York Times, suggesting that bilingualism may stave off dementia.

People who spoke two languages daily in their youth tended to score higher on memory tests later in life, the researchers found.
