Congratulations to NYU Journalism’s own India Rice, who has been named a 2026-27 France Ellen Watkins Fellow at The 19th.

Named for the “mother of Black journalism,” the Frances Ellen Watkins Harper Fellowship provides early- and mid-career HBCU alumni with full-time opportunities across The 19th’s newsroom and business teams.

Currently a Reporting the Nation & New York student, India has a background in multimedia reporting with a passion for telling stories about culture, politics, and entertainment. She’s previously interned at SiriusXM and New York Public Radio, and is a graduate of Clark Atlanta University.

Meet Shaan Merchant, a 2024 LitRep grad who writes about culture, media, food and travel. He has bylines in The New York Times, Slate, The Nation, Rolling Stone, and Oxford American.

Shaan is also the author of Survivor Legends, a book of profiles tracing the evolution of performance and strategy on reality television’s most influential show.

Alumni Spotlight 🤩

Becca O’Reilly graduated this past May with a BA in Journalism (print track) and a BFA in Drama, where she trained at the Experimental Theatre Wing, plus a minor in Business of Entertainment Media and Technology.

She’s now a freelance sports reporter for The Philadelphia Inquirer. Her advice for journalism majors? Write a lot, and don’t be afraid to let others read your work.

“In school, I sometimes felt protective over my writing and would dwell on one story for far too long. In the newsroom, there’s no space to hold on to your words — the more writing you can do, and the more people you can get to look it over, the better.”
