The CUNY Mexican Studies Institute The CUNY Mexican Studies Institute serves as a resource for the Mexican community in New York, promoting college enrollment, research and advocacy.

The CUNY Institute of Mexican Studies, based at Lehman College, is the culmination of nearly a decade of work by faculty, administrators, staff, and students to boost enrollment of Mexican and Mexican-American students, foster research with and about Mexico and Mexicans in the United States, and collaborate with community-based organizations to support and empower the Mexican immigrant community.

With a special focus on Mexicans in the diaspora, especially Mexicans in New York, the Institute offers a space for the Mexican community to consider its own and an institutional location for support of scholarly and community advocacy projects. Fundamental to the Institute's foundation and success will be its ability to further new projects with community and cultural organizations, to channel projects already underway and to build on existing efforts within and outside of CUNY. Mexicans constitute the fastest-growing national sub-group in New York City, due to high rates of immigration and births. If these rates remain the same, the Mexican population will surpass that of other Latino groups in New York City by the year 2024. The number of Mexicans living in New York City has grown 57.7 percent in the last decade. The Mexican population in New York City is 319,126, according to U.S. Census data for the most recent year available, 2010. With the growth of this population comes a need for institutions that advocate for the population and support the development of community leadership and mobilization. In CUNY, the Mexican student population has grown 265% since 2000!

Mexico–New York Opportunities for Cooperation and Partnership Research Fellowship
Call for Applications | Fall 2026

The Mexican Studies Institute (MSI) at Lehman College, in collaboration with the Mexican American Policy Alliance (MAPA), invites applications for a $1,500 research fellowship focused on identifying concrete opportunities to strengthen cooperation between Mexico and New York.

The selected fellow will conduct independent, policy-oriented research and develop a final report examining a specific opportunity, challenge, or area where stronger Mexico–New York collaboration could generate economic, educational, institutional, or cultural benefits.

Areas of interest include, but not limited to:

💼 Workforce cooperation & professional development
🎓 Higher education & academic partnerships
🎭 Arts, culture & cultural institutions

The fellowship offers:
• $1,500 stipend and hands-on experience in applied research, evidence-based analysis, and professional writing
• Opportunity for the final report to be considered for online publication through the MSI CUNY Academic Works repository

For the first time ever, Juan Gabriel’s legendary 1990 Bellas Artes concert is coming to U.S. movie theaters.
 
Juan Gabriel: Mi Primer Bellas Artes is a newly re-edited and restored presentation of the historic performance that made history when Juan Gabriel became the first popular music artist to perform at Mexico City’s iconic Palacio de Bellas Artes — a moment that forever changed the place of popular Mexican music in the country’s cultural landscape.
Now, more than three decades later, a new generation will have the chance to experience this unforgettable performance on the big screen.
 
The restored edition also features a previously unseen introduction, including rehearsal footage and material from Juan Gabriel’s personal archive. The restoration and re-edit were led by Mexican filmmaker and visual artist María José Cuevas.

🎬 El apando — Felipe Cazals, 1975
Adaptación de la novela homónima de José Revueltas, realizada por el propio Revueltas y José Agustín.

🎬 La viuda de Montiel — Miguel Littin, 1979
Basada en la novela de Gabriel García Márquez y adaptada por Miguel Littin y José Agustín.

🎬 Ciudad de ciegos — Alberto Cortés, 1991
En este filme episódico, José Agustín colaboró en el guion junto a Paz Alicia Garciadiego y otros escritores.
 
José Agustín participó en el taller literario de Juan José Arreola de 1962 a 1965, donde escribió su primera novela, La Tumba, a los 19 años de edad y en 1966, publicó la novela De perfil. Con éstas, inauguró, junto con otros escritores, la llamada “literatura de la onda”, que significó un aire nuevo para las letras mexicanas al incorporar elementos de la cultura pop y retratar la actualidad de los jóvenes de la época.

Hoy compartimos el trabajo de Cinthya Santos Briones Cinthya Santos Briones , quien forma parte del equipo del Mexican Studies Institute CUNY Mexican Studies Institute y su exposición Living in Sanctuary, presentada recientemente en Baxter BAXTER ST at the Camera Club of NY como parte de su Open Call Mid-Career.

Cinthya Santos Briones es artista multidisciplinaria, investigadora y educadora. Living in Sanctuary es un proyecto de investigación visual que desarrolla desde 2017. A través de fotografías, historia oral, dibujos, etnografía experimental, collage, documentos históricos y materiales multimedia, el proyecto investiga las formas en que las políticas migratorias y de seguridad nacional atraviesan los cuerpos, los espacios domésticos y la vida cotidiana de las comunidades migrantes.

El proyecto parte de la primera administración de Donald Trump, un periodo marcado por deportaciones masivas y separaciones familiares, durante el cual numerosas personas indocumentadas desafiaron públicamente las políticas de expulsión y buscaron santuario en iglesias, templos y comunidades de fe en distintas partes de Estados Unidos.

En estos espacios, el santuario dejó de ser únicamente un lugar de protección para convertirse también en una práctica política y colectiva: una forma de resistir a la expulsión mediante la permanencia, la fe, el cuidado y la construcción de refugio.

Living in Sanctuary reúne estas experiencias como un archivo vivo que reflexiona sobre migración, pertenencia, hospitalidad y resistencia, y sobre lo que significa construir y sostener un hogar cuando el derecho a permanecer está constantemente amenazado.
