The CUNY Mexican Studies Institute The CUNY Mexican Studies Institute serves as a resource for the Mexican community in New York, promoting college enrollment, research and advocacy.

The CUNY Institute of Mexican Studies, based at Lehman College, is the culmination of nearly a decade of work by faculty, administrators, staff, and students to boost enrollment of Mexican and Mexican-American students, foster research with and about Mexico and Mexicans in the United States, and collaborate with community-based organizations to support and empower the Mexican immigrant community. With a special focus on Mexicans in the diaspora, especially Mexicans in New York, the Institute offers a space for the Mexican community to consider its own and an institutional location for support of scholarly and community advocacy projects. Fundamental to the Institute's foundation and success will be its ability to further new projects with community and cultural organizations, to channel projects already underway and to build on existing efforts within and outside of CUNY. Mexicans constitute the fastest-growing national sub-group in New York City, due to high rates of immigration and births. If these rates remain the same, the Mexican population will surpass that of other Latino groups in New York City by the year 2024. The number of Mexicans living in New York City has grown 57.7 percent in the last decade. The Mexican population in New York City is 319,126, according to U.S. Census data for the most recent year available, 2010. With the growth of this population comes a need for institutions that advocate for the population and support the development of community leadership and mobilization. In CUNY, the Mexican student population has grown 265% since 2000!

En esta fecha, te invitamos a descubrir tres historias que nos acercan a las experiencias, luchas y formas de resistencia de distintos pueblos indígenas de América Latina, así como a sus esfuerzos por defender sus derechos, territorios, lenguas y culturas.
 
🎥 Lupita. Que retiemble la tierra (2020), de Mónica Wise Robles. Retrato de Lupita, mujer tsotsil, madre, luchadora social y líder del movimiento de mujeres indígenas Las Abejas de Acteal.
 
🎥 Qotzuñi: La gente del lago (2024), de Gastón Zilberman y Michael Salama. La lucha del pueblo Uru-Murato de Bolivia por preservar su identidad tras la desaparición del lago Poopó.
 
🎥 Las visitadoras (La palabra justa) (2018), de Sergio Blanco. La labor de Lupita, intérprete de la lengua rarámuri, para facilitar el acceso a la justicia de los hablantes de su idioma en Chihuahua.

⚫️ 2 de octubre no se olvida

On October 2, 1968, a student demonstration in Mexico City’s Plaza de las Tres Culturas ended in a massacre amid a government crackdown on the student movement.

But October 2 is also the story of everything that came before it: the organizing, the protests, the alliances and the fight against oppression.

We spoke with Susana Draper, author of 1968 Mexico: Constellations of Freedom and Democracy, about why remembering 1968 only through the massacre can make us lose sight of the movement itself.

Her work also challenges a historical narrative that has often centered men while overlooking the women who organized, led, and helped shape the political imagination of the movement.

El pasado 15 de septiembre, la comunidad mexicana y mexicoamericana de distintos rincones de Nueva York se reunió en Sunset Park, un importante espacio de encuentro para nuestra comunidad, para conmemorar la Ceremonia del Grito de Independencia, recordar nuestra historia y las luchas que dieron origen a la Independencia de México, y celebrar nuestra cultura, nuestras raíces y el orgullo de nuestra comunidad.

En esta ocasión queremos reconocer especialmente a las y los vendedores ambulantes, quienes con su trabajo, sus productos, sabores y colores hicieron que Sunset Park se vistiera de verde, blanco y rojo.
Celebrar nuestra cultura también significa reconocer el trabajo de quienes, como las y los vendedores ambulantes, mantienen vivas nuestras tradiciones, contribuyen a la economía local y hacen de nuestros barrios espacios con identidad, diversidad y vida comunitaria.
