Pulitzer Prize Winner Jericho Brown is the 2026 Langston Hughes Festival Medal Recipient. Join us November 19-20, 2026 as we honor him and celebrate his work!

This year’s festival also celebrates Black literary and cultural innovation across generations, marking the 100th anniversary of FIRE!!: A Quarterly Devoted to the Younger Negro Artists and the 60th anniversary of the Percy Ellis Sutton Search for Education, Elevation, and Knowledge (SEEK) Program at CUNY.

Over two days, the Festival will feature student presentations, musical guests, dramatic performances from Quintessence Theatre, receptions, and our signature Medallion Ceremony, including a reading and conversation with Jericho Brown led by Claudia Rankine.

Join us as we celebrate the enduring legacies of Langston Hughes, FIRE!!, SEEK, Black Studies, and the artists and thinkers who continue to shape our world.

For Banned Books Week, we’re highlighting 18 past Langston Hughes Medallion recipients whose works have been banned, challenged, removed, or restricted in the United States.

CCNY STUDENTS, JOIN the Fire! Remix Zine & Creative Arts Workshop cosponsored by FIRE! Press!

This five-session workshop series explores Fire!!, the groundbreaking 1926 publication featuring many acclaimed Harlem Renaissance writers and thinkers: Langston Hughes, Zora Neale Hurston, Richard Bruce Nugent, and Wallace Thurman, along with artwork by Aaron Douglas.

It’s the 100-year anniversary of its publication, and Fire! Press is excited to collaborate with the Black Studies Department at CCNY on a contemporary zine and creative arts workshop that responds to the original publication through a 2026 lens.

**Stipends of $50 are provided to participating students who complete the workshop series.**

The zine and other artwork arising from the workshop will be featured as part of the Langston Hughes Festival/Fire!! Centennial Celebration on Thursday, November 19, 2026, at CCNY.

Interested students can pre-register by completing the form in the LinkTree.

Seating for the workshop is limited.

Registration deadline is Thursday, October 8th!

Please join us in welcoming Leilani, our new Academic Experience Manager!

Leilani brings a background in higher education, student engagement, program development, communications, and community building. In her role, she supports the department’s academic and administrative operations, programming, faculty and student engagement, and initiatives that strengthen the Black Studies community.

She holds a B.A. in Journalism and Social & Cultural Analysis, with a concentration in Africana Studies, from New York University. Outside of work, Leilani enjoys writing, photography, and exploring creative ways to tell stories and connect people.
