Congratulations to this year’s Music Therapy Program graduates! Students had the opportunity to attend NYU Steinhardt’s graduation ceremony at Radio City Music Hall, as well as the University-wide commencement at Yankee Stadium. Not all of our graduating students are pictured, but after their completion of 2 years of coursework and clinical experience, this commemoration is well deserved for each and every one. Bravo, students! We can’t wait to see what you do next 👏🏼 💜

After learning that he successfully defended his NYU Music Therapy doctoral dissertation today, Dr. Jose Urrea was moved to respond in music. Whether or not you've had the pleasure of hearing Jose sing before, make sure that you listen through to the end of the song.

Congratulations to Dr. Jose Urrea for the successful defense of his doctoral dissertation: "Bridging the Divide: A Music Therapy-Informed Process for University Music Students to Promote Health and Wellbeing." (From left to right: Dr. Lawrence Ferrara and Dr. Nancy Smithner (readers), Drs. Kenneth Aigen, Adriana Diaz-Donoso, and Nisha Sajnani (Dissertation Committee). Jose overcame much adversity to reach NYU in the fall of 2020 when Covid restrictions made getting to us from his home in Colombia very challenging. And in the six years since, he has become a much beloved fixture of the NYU Music Therapy Community.

Anna Palumbo, Research Manager at the Nordoff-Robbins Center for Music Therapy, was a featured speaker at "Tuning into Mechanisms: Live Music for Pain Management". This is a conference hosted by the Louis Armstrong Center for Music and Medicine at Mount Sinai, with support from the National Institutes of Health U24 ENSEMBLE Network.

Read below for a description of Anna's presentation:

The shared neural pathways of pain and reward suggest that reward may play a key role in modulating acute and chronic pain. Live music also engages reward through both receptive music listening and active playing. The mechanisms of musical reward have been linked to social connection, synchronization, and processes of co-creation. This talk will review what is known about the neural mechanisms of pain and reward, and how live music may beneficially modulate these pathways.

After years of dedicated work, we are proud to announce that Music Therapy Program Director Dr. Alan Turry is the lead author -- along with other NYU staff as co-authors -- in a newly published, groundbreaking article in the Journal of Music Therapy. The "Music Engagement Scale: An Instrument to Measure Engagement in Music Making" offers an important tool in assessing the value of music-based music therapy approaches. The article is linked here:

Congratulations to Dr. Alan Turry & Dr. Anna Palumbo, who are part of a research team that has received the Renée Fleming Neuroarts Investigator Award this year! The research they are conducting examines how music therapy may enhance the social communication skills and experiences of Autistic children. Using wearable technology to assess Social Motor Synchrony (SMS) alongside social communication measures, Dr. Turry states that the study aims to "inform scalable, evidence-based music interventions, and build a foundation for broader access" to effective, personalized care for Autistic people.
