Who says you can’t talk in the library? Just as you gather in Butler or Burke Library with friends and acquaintances to talk about books, debate ideas, work on your research, and even just hang out, so too did bookish people of the past. The library has always been a meeting place for people from distinct religious communities. They often spoke different languages, and they generally disagreed about many things. But they engaged in dialogue. How, exactly? And why?

Come join IRCPL Director Seth Kimmel and Burke Library’s Collection Services Librarian Jeffrey Wayno to explore rare books and manuscripts, and stay for the free lunch!

What does it mean to be healthy? Are we responsible for the health of others? Are we responsible for our own? The concept of health in the United States is slippery, built on an ever-shifting foundation of scientific, religious, and moral ideas. As the Covid-19 pandemic made painfully clear, moments of health crisis surface competing visions of health, revealing the ways our existing systems of care ignore the needs of the disabled, people of color, and the LGBTQ community. This conversation brings together historians of religion, science, and sexuality in the twentieth century to situate our current moment in a longer history of health and disability in the United States as both a scientific and religious question.

The Institute for Religion, Culture and Public Life at Columbia University is seeking submissions to its annual Claremont Publication Prize for the Study of Religion. The publication prize is awarded to the best first book manuscript by early career scholars working in any discipline of the humanities or social sciences. Prize-winners will be invited to participate in a book workshop with members of the IRCPL faculty board, and the book, when finalized, will appear in IRCPL’s series, “Religion, Culture and Public Life,” published by Columbia University Press.
