Student Advocates for the Arts

Student Advocates for the Arts SAA works to educate, empower, and mobilize students to influence the arts and cultural sector. Run by Arts Administration students at Columbia University.

Founded in 2002 by graduate students in the Arts Administration program at Teachers College, Columbia University, Student Advocates for the Arts (SAA) engages students in hands-on lobbying, workshops on advocacy and cultural policy, and discussions on the American system for funding the arts. Today, SAA has grown to encompass multiple student groups across the country that continue the work of the

original chapter members. This particular website is run by members of the SAA chapter at Columbia University in New York City.

Amidst these critical times, Student Advocates for the Arts at Teachers College, would like to voice our support and solidarity towards our fellow Black community. The SAA stands together against racism and injustice. We hear you, we see you, and we are here for you.

“Right now, each of us – including and especially those of us with power and privilege – has a responsibility to stand up against racial bias, racial hatred, and the evil of racism.” A message from President Thomas Bailey: https://bit.ly/2U2gASG

Our organization works to educate, empower, and mobilize. Our vision is to serve as a platform for critical debate, resource sharing, and capacity building in arts advocacy.

This semester we wanted to highlight and bring student voices to the conversation by exploring all the means in which we as a community can advocate for the arts. This included exploring artwork that serves as a form of activism or which reflects on the impact of art in society.

We partnered and received incredible support from the Chinese Calligraphy Club, the Gottesman Libraries, the Office of the Vice President for Diversity and Community Affairs, the Office of Student Affairs, and the Arts Administration Program to bring this exhibition to our TC and CU community.

Learn more about Tia Dorsey's artistic vision and trajectory here!

Visit the exhibition in the Offit Gallery on the third floor of the Gottesman Libraries at Teachers College, Columbia University.
Open until February 16, 2019.
