A library, a historical -cultural dictionary, and an award-winning documentary all inspired by BMCC’s Spanish Language and Literature professor Dr. Francisca (Paquita) Suárez Coalla

June 18, 2026

The day began a few hours earlier at a local high school in Arriondas in Asturias, Spain, where the Paquita SuĂĄrez Coalla Library was officially inaugurated. This gesture recognizes an author who has long maintained a close relationship with the school and whose texts have served as a starting point for several educational projects developed by the students.

The students built a dictionary letter by letter (with their definitions and even detailed drawings) for a very specific reason: a book by the Asturian writer Paquita SuĂĄrez Coalla entitled CamĂn de lletres.

It is an alphabetical journey between Asturias and New York through the eyes of a girl who lives between both worlds. With each letter, the author composes a mosaic of places, memories, and everyday scenes, transforming the alphabet into a unique way of describing these territories.

Suárez Coalla’s work has also inspired the documentary “The Day They Took Us to the Movies” (translated into English by BMCC’s Dr. Maria Enrico), based on her collection of short stories and later developed into a collective investigation into the history of the old cinema in Arriondas. The students of this high school read it in English alongside the Asturian version. They then created a documentary on the history of cinema in the municipality of Parres and were awarded first prize for pedagogical innovation by the Ciencias de la Educación College/Teachers College at the University of Oviedo.

🎉 CONGRATULATIONS to John Guzman on being selected for the prestigious TAPIF Program! 🇫🇷

The Teaching Assistant Program in France (TAPIF) gives participants the opportunity to work as English teaching assistants in France while experiencing French culture and education firsthand.

“My French journey began at BMCC, where I had the incredible opportunity to learn the language with professors who provided constant support and encouragement throughout my studies. I would take that knowledge to Hunter College, where I continued studying French and even had the opportunity to study abroad in France, which further strengthened my desire to teach abroad. As someone who has studied languages and enjoys learning about different cultures, being selected for this program means a lot to me. I’m excited for the opportunity to improve my French, gain valuable teaching experience, and serve as a representative of my community abroad.”

We are proud to celebrate John’s achievement and wish him the best as he begins this exciting new chapter! ✨
