ILETC’s LaPEL Team Presents by Invitation at the Interagency Language Roundtable!

We’re pleased to announce that the LaPEL (Language Placement for Equitable Learning) team has been invited to present our study on using vocabulary knowledge as a proxy for proficiency level at the Interagency Language Roundtable (ILR), hosted by the Foreign Service Institute, both online and in Arlington, Virginia.

The three-year LaPEL project, funded by a U.S. Department of Education IFLE (International and Foreign Language Education) grant, is a pioneering initiative to improve instruction in modern heritage languages by investigating sustainable, proficiency-based placement methods for college-level Spanish heritage language learners, a historically underserved population.

Cristina Lozano Argüelles and Alberta Gatti will be presenting. The roundtable will take place on May 17th, 2024, and registration for both virtual and in-person attendance closes on May 10th at noon.

We’re pleased to announce that the IPAP (Investigating Pedagogies for Advanced Proficiency) team has been accepted to present our Complexity study at the Heritage Languages Around the World 2 (HLAW2) conference taking place from May 29th to 31st, 2024 at UMass, Amherst.

The complexity component of the IPAP project has the goal of understanding the patterns of syntactic complexity, accuracy, and lexical use in the writing of heritage language learners (HLLs) at two major levels of functional proficiency: Intermediate and Advanced (following the American Council for the Teaching of Foreign Languages, ACTFL, 2012 Guidelines).

Alberta Gatti, Daniela Castillo, and Syelle Graves will be presenting. Registration to attend all presentations is open at HLAW’s registration website.

About HLAW2 After the very successful HLAW 1 at the University of Lisbon in 2022, the Heritage Languages Around the World 2 (HLAW2) conference will be held at the University of Massachusetts Amherst from May 29th to 31st, 2024. This is a joint initiative of the Portuguese and Brazilian Studies Prog...

In 2015, The United Nations (UN) adopted a 2030 agenda, which included peace at its core. Based on this blueprint, the UN member states agreed to…

Peacebuilding here is focused at the macrolevel of government actors and institutions, including educational organizations; however, work within language and culture education suggests that individuals, including those in conflict-ridden parts of the world, often cite inner and interpersonal dimensions of peace as central. What roles might intercultural learning play in fostering peace across and between these disparate levels? What might an intercultural education for peacebuilding that is cognizant of disparity and pain look like? What kinds of connections between intercultural peace and other dimensions including inner peace and ecological peace can our language curricula and programs help students to explore? How can language educators promote respect for all, build a sense of belonging to a common humanity, and help learners become responsible and active global citizens?

Documentary Screening ~ Princeton University ~ April 5, 2018

The Eyes of the Journey

The documentary premiered at the Festival de Cine de Lima in August 2017. It was filmed entirely in Quechua and it follows Hipolito Peralta, a healer and a strong proponent of the revitalization of Andean thought and spirituality in his journey through several sacred spaces in the Andean world. Peralta has an MA in Bilingual Intercultural Education from the Universidad de San Simón (Cochabamba, Bolivia) and has worked extensively on revitalizing the Quechua language. He has researched Quechuan traditional knowledge about human relations with nature to find a balanced way of living with ecological preservation.

Announcing the launch of Teleplaza—a new platform for heritage Spanish language telecollaboration! Teleplaza connects college classes from different communities with diverse experiences, encouraging students to learn together and from one another. Sign up for Teleplaza today and find a partner for your next telecollaboration!

Teleplaza is an online platform that connects instructors of heritage Spanish and/or Latinx Studies courses across the US. You can post a telecollaborative project and find a partner for it, or respond to a call for partnership already posted on the portal. Projects may range from short-term collaborations to semester-long partnerships, and can be set up using synchronous or asynchronous communication technologies. These projects can be integrated into language or content courses to support a variety of learning objectives, such as proficiency development, literacy development, and/or the exploration of specific content.

In one pilot project, Teleplaza connected Latinx students attending a community college on the East Coast with a heritage Spanish class at a private 4-year school on the West Coast. Participants discussed interpretations of the “American Dream” in the context of issues of unequal access to education. Another pilot connected Latinx students of Caribbean descent with Latinx students of Mexican descent, who together explored issues of language and identity.

If you plan to be in Nashville for the American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages (ACTFL) Convention and Expo, visit us at Booth 1333 and/or plan to attend a presentation on Teleplaza on Saturday, November 18 from 9:45 to 9:55 a.m. at our booth.

Questions? Send us a message on Facebook, use the contact form on the Teleplaza website, or email us at [email protected].
