May 4th, 1916, the first meeting of the Working Council was held at Lucy Sprague Mitchell’s house, marking the beginning of what would become Bank Street. 📚✨ As the primary administrative body of the Bureau of Educational Experiments (our predecessor), the Working Council marked the beginning of our story, shaping the way we’d blend educational research and hands-on learning.

During this meeting the name The Bureau of Educational Experiments was officially chosen over the Bureau of School Information, defining the institution’s mission to explore new educational methods and approaches. Evelyn Dewey, daughter of John Dewey, was among those present. Visit the Bank Street Archives to explore more of our history!🌱

A Writer-in-Residence is a program where a professional writer is invited by an institution—such as a university, school, library, or even a corporation—to work and engage with their community for a set period. Think of it as a creative "exchange program." Thank you Dan Gutman for being our 2026 Dorothy Carter writer-in residence.
