Join us as we celebrate the publication of ๐˜š๐˜ข๐˜ฅ๐˜ช๐˜ด๐˜ต๐˜ช๐˜ค ๐˜Š๐˜ฉ๐˜ฐ๐˜ญ๐˜ข๐˜ด: ๐˜›๐˜ณ๐˜ข๐˜ฏ๐˜ด๐˜ง๐˜ฆ๐˜ฎ๐˜ช๐˜ฏ๐˜ช๐˜ด๐˜ต ๐˜—๐˜ณ๐˜ฐ๐˜ท๐˜ฐ๐˜ค๐˜ข๐˜ต๐˜ช๐˜ฐ๐˜ฏ๐˜ด ๐˜ช๐˜ฏ ๐˜Š๐˜ฐ๐˜ฏ๐˜ต๐˜ฆ๐˜ฎ๐˜ฑ๐˜ฐ๐˜ณ๐˜ข๐˜ณ๐˜บ ๐˜—๐˜ฆ๐˜ณ๐˜ถ (UT Press, 2026), Olga Rodrรญguez-Ulloaโ€™s groundbreaking new book. Professor Rodrรญguez-Ulloa will be joined by special guests Simรณn Trujillo (NYU) and Cynthia Melรฉndez (NYU).

๐˜š๐˜ข๐˜ฅ๐˜ช๐˜ด๐˜ต๐˜ช๐˜ค ๐˜Š๐˜ฉ๐˜ฐ๐˜ญ๐˜ข๐˜ด examines music, visual arts, literature, and grassroots organizing by self-identified cholasโ€”in particular, Black women and trans and q***r feminists. Under colonial domination, cholas were destined for sexual coercion, labor extraction, and reproductive exploitation. While exhuming historical traces of chola resistance, Rodriguez-Ulloa shows how todayโ€™s artists experiment with an aesthetic of sadistic vengeance, configured as rightful self-defense. Yet, in spite of their violent imagery, activist cholas pursue nonviolent goals, promoting a commons of care incorporating people, animals, and the environment.

NYU students, faculty, and staff may enter using their NYU ID. All non-NYU attendees must register in advance.
