Department of East Asian Studies at New York University The Department of East Asian Studies at New York University offers courses on China, Japan and Korea. Fourth-year study is also offered in all three languages.

The focus of the undergraduate program is primarily on language, history and literature and the way in which these three civilizations have interacted with the Western world to reconstitute received cultures into modern societies. By intensive study of Asian culture, the student is encouraged to reflect on the global interrelatedness of human society. At present, three language sequences are offer

ed: a six-semester Chinese language sequence, a six-semester Japanese language sequence, and a six-semester Korean language sequence. In addition, various courses in Asian culture are offered in the Program in East Asian Studies, while courses in history, politics, and art are available in other departments

We also offer a doctoral and master’s program in East Asian Culture. The graduate program is concerned with culture, media, and questions of representation as they relate to the formation of East Asian societies such as China, Japan and Korea in modern times. Rather than pursue the practice of area studies in the traditional sense, the program is committed to a critical and, whenever possible interdisciplinary examination of East Asia’s modernity in a global configuration. While the program will emphasize how received pasts interact in the modern present of these societies, the principal emphasis will be on the question of modernity in search of its own historicity as both an historical and theoretical problematic.

NYU Students! May 3rd, in the Great Room at 19 University Place, Professor Yoshikuni Igarashi will presenting “Television is the Message: Japan’s Early Encounters with the New Medium”.

This talk will focus on the role that television played in Japan’s transformation to a mass consumer society. Igarashi will gauge its underestimated socioeconomic effects on Japanese society by revisiting the early years of its introduction, when it was still a newsworthy event. The dramatic transformation that Japan experienced under the high-growth economy (1955-1972) was not only political, social, economic, and cultural but also intensely visual. Television was instrumental to how individuals came to see themselves and their nation during this period. Through television, individuals became deeply embedded in a newly emerging national space: their everyday lives viewed as part of an unfolding national drama. This new media provided viewers an expansive vision even as it taught them to internalize its conforming gaze.

The Department of East Asian Studies is excited to announce this year's EAS NIGHT! 🌙

Join us for music, dancing, and other live and pre-recorded performances from current East Asian Studies students highlighting the cultures our Department represents. Everything from live K-pop choreography to traditional Chinese singing and Japanese live music will be there, so you don't want to miss it!

Contest is open from March 7th through April 29th

❔HOW:
Please fill out the Google Form (via the QR code) to submit your entries.

❕RULES:
- The contest is open to any students taking an EAS-sponsored course.
- The dimensions of your design need to be a maximum of 11"x11".
- The only requirement is that your design clearly reads "NYU EAS" somewhere.
- No profanities/suggestive content.
- Feel free to use as many colors as you'd like!

Your fellow EAS students will vote on the top three submissions, and our faculty will pick the grand prize winner. $100 prize will go to the winner, and $50 prize to the two runner-ups!

K-Friends sessions are a great opportunity for you if you want to: get help with your homework, learn about Korean culture, practice conversation in Korean with Korean students, or earn extra credit!

Joinn EAS on Tuesday, 2/15, 6 PM - 8 PM, for Japanese Movie Night! We will be watching "南極料理人 The Chef of South Polar"

Note: This event is restricted to NYU students only.

Based on two autobiographical novels by Jun Nishimura, this film centers around a research expedition living in Dome Fuji Station near the South Pole. The area, which is located far from Showa Station, has an average temperature of -54 degrees celcius and is situated 3800 meters above sea level. A cook named Nishimura (Masato Sakai) leaves his family behind in order to assist the expedition. Out in the middle of nowhere, Nishimura manages to cook extravagant meals consisting of high-class ingredients like foie gras, spiny lobster, and Matsuzaka beef in this true story of wintering party male bonding.
