History hits different when it stops being just a name in a textbook. 🇬🇭

Our UMLA scholars visited the Kwame Nkrumah Memorial Park, learning more about Ghana’s first president and his vision for independence, African unity, and self-determination.

Study abroad isn’t only about seeing somewhere new.

From New York City to Ghana… the journey begins. 🇬🇭✈️

For 10 UMLA students, alongside Dr. Ashtian Holmes and Marc Louis, this was the first step into Sankofa: A Rite of Passage in Ghana, an international learning experience that would take the classroom far beyond New York City.

This wasn’t just about getting on a plane.

It was about stepping into something new with curiosity, courage, and an open mind, ready to learn about Ghana’s history, culture, communities, traditions, and the connections that would be made along the way.

For some, it was their first journey to Africa. For everyone, it was the beginning of an experience they would carry back home with them. 🌍💙

Some of the best memories don’t happen inside a classroom. 🕷️🎬💙

Our MBK scholars stepped outside the everyday routine for a day in NYC together, ending it with the new Spider-Man movie on the big screen. 🍿

From traveling together to laughing, connecting, and enjoying the experience, moments like these are what community is all about.

Because MBK is more than academics. It’s the friendships, experiences, and memories you build along the way.

On this day, history keeps calling back to August 28th.

1955 — Emmett Till was murdered in Mississippi, and his mother's courage to show the world what hate had done lit a fire under a movement.

1963 — Hundreds of thousands marched on Washington, and Dr. King told the nation about a dream that still isn't fully realized.

2008 — Barack Obama accepted the Democratic nomination, becoming the first Black man to do so in American history, proof of how far that dream had carried.

Three moments, one date, one throughline: progress is never given, it's fought for.

Our MBK mentees are reflecting on everything they’ve experienced during their first week of the MBK Summer Program. From meeting new people to stepping outside their comfort zones, each day has been another step toward building confidence, community, and a successful college journey.

Success starts with the right mindset, clear priorities, and the confidence to take ownership of your future. 🎯

During the MBK Summer Program, Ashtian Holmes led our MBK Scholars through an engaging session on managing their time and energy, using available resources, building meaningful connections, seeking mentorship, and creating opportunities instead of waiting for them.

The session reminded our scholars that their voices, decisions, and actions matter. At BMCC UMLA, we are helping students develop the confidence, community, and habits needed to succeed in college and beyond. 💙🎓
