From first-day goals to final reflections. 🎯➡️🎓

Devonne Ismail Beharrie, Terrel Anderson, Jose Aguilar, Kevin Tiniguar, Joseph Bonilla, Ivan Castro, and Alex Wilson started the MBK 2026 journey by sharing what they hoped to accomplish.

Along the way, our scholars built real-world skills through Financial Literacy with Chase, strengthened their community, and continued working toward the goals they set from Day 1. 💙

Now, as the program comes full circle, we hear directly from our students about what they learned, how they grew, and what they’re taking with them beyond MBK.

Sometimes you don’t realize how far you’ve come… until you look back at where you started. 💭

Same Convocation. A different lens. 📸💙

Our last post shared the story of the MBK 4th Annual Convocation for Men of Color. This time, we’re taking another look at the moments that made the day what it was.

The conversations between students. The focus in the room. The applause. The smiles. The speakers taking the mic. And the moments in between that sometimes tell the story better than words can.

These photos capture what UMLA and MBK are all about: showing up, learning from one another, building relationships, and creating memories along the way. 🤝🏽

A room full of voices, leadership, connection, and community. 💙🤝🏽

The MBK 4th Annual Convocation for Men of Color brought together students, educators, mentors, community leaders, and advocates to celebrate the experiences, achievements, and potential of men of color.

From meaningful conversations and student voices to mentorship, networking, and community, the evening was a reminder of what happens when we create spaces where students can feel seen, supported, and empowered to succeed.

We celebrated how far we’ve come, strengthened the connections around us, and continued building toward what comes next. 🏆✨

Thank you to everyone who showed up, shared their voice, and helped make this year’s convocation a meaningful one.

Together, we rise. Together, we thrive. 💙

Sometimes taking care of yourself starts with a conversation. 💙🗣️💈

UMLA came together for a special edition of our Mental Wellness Barbershop Talk Series in celebration of Spanish Heritage Month.

With guest speaker Dr. Troy Brown from the Counseling Center, students had an open conversation about mental wellness, resilience, supporting one another, and the importance of taking care of yourself, mentally and emotionally.

And of course, it wouldn’t be a Barbershop Talk without the barbers. 💈✂️

Free cuts, real conversations, good food, laughs, and most importantly, a space where students could simply connect.

Because sometimes community is more than just being in the same room.

It’s knowing you don’t have to figure everything out alone. 🤝💙

Some moments ask us to stop, remember, and reflect. 🇺🇸

BMCC came together for the 9/11 25th Anniversary Commemoration to honor the lives lost, recognize the strength of our community, and remember the impact that September 11 continues to carry.

For UMLA, being present for moments like this is about more than attending an event, it’s about understanding our history, standing together, and carrying those lessons forward.

Sometimes, giving back isn’t about what you bring, it’s about what you build together. 🇬🇭💙

Our time with the ROBB Foundation in Ghana was a reminder that community can start with something as simple as a basketball, a conversation, or just showing up for one another.

What began as a visit became a moment of connection, joy, and shared purpose, supporting a mission centered on inclusion, dignity, and opportunity for people with Down syndrome in Ghana.

Different places. Different stories. Same belief that everyone deserves to feel seen, valued, and included. 🤝🏾🌍

For Shawn, Ghana became more than a trip. It was a chance to connect with the culture, the history, and a part of himself that felt deeper than words.
