The Montefiore Einstein Center for Bioethics was proud to celebrate our graduates alongside the Master of Science in Clinical Research Methods program at our commencement ceremony at Albert Einstein College of Medicine. We are so grateful to our commencement speaker, Dr. Kevin Fiori Jr., for sharing his insights and inspiration with our graduates as they begin the next chapter of their professional journeys.

MECB Director, Dr. Elizabeth Chuang participated in NYC Health + Hospitals’ Annual John B. Corser Memorial Symposium this week as one of the keynote speakers on the topic of Improving Communication During End of Life Care. In addition to leading Montefiore Health System's Center for Bioethics, she is the Dr. Shoshanah Trachtenberg Frackman Scholar in Biomedical Ethics and a Professor of Medicine, Epidemiology and Population Health, and Family and Social Medicine at Albert Einstein College of Medicine. Dr. Chuang’s research and pedagogy focuses on clinician communication with patients and families in the setting of terminal illness and the bioethical implications of providing end-of-life care to marginalized communities. Her National Institutes of Health (NIH)-funded research program employs Community-Based Participatory Research to ensure that end-of-life communication is rooted in community needs, priorities, and values.

Congratulations to Leona Isufaj, BSN, RN, of the MICU at Montefiore Einstein’s Wakefield Campus, for being honored with the Joan H. Bilder Nursing Excellence Award during Montefiore Einstein’s annual Nurses Week celebration.

This award recognizes excellence in clinical nursing practice. Leona was recognized for combining advanced clinical expertise with compassionate, patient-centered care while supporting critically ill patients and their families through some of the most difficult moments in healthcare, including end-of-life decision-making.

Known for her collaborative approach, Leona works closely with multidisciplinary teams to ensure high-quality care is aligned with patient goals. As a dedicated preceptor and active participant in professional governance, she also helps mentor colleagues and foster a strong unit culture.

Beyond the bedside, Leona contributes to initiatives that enhance the patient and family experience, including the “3 Wishes Project,” which creates meaningful moments for patients and loved ones during critical illness.
