The Montefiore Einstein Center for Bioethics is home to Montefiore's Clinical Ethics Consultation Service, Institutional Bioethics Committee, Certificate in Bioethics and Medical Humanities, M.S. Welcome to Einstein Cardozo Bioethics - fostering ethical practices in patient care, research and health policy. This collaboration between Albert Einstein College of Medicine and Cardozo Law builds upon the long history and rich clinical experience of the Montefiore Einstein bioethics consultation service. Our unique program integrates scholarship in medicine, law and the humanities, and includes a strong narrative focus to expand students' understanding of complex bioethical issues. With courses such as Consultation Skills, Reproductive Ethics, Empathy, and Policy Writing, our program provides personal enrichment while equipping you with the skills you need to navigate the nuances of policy and regulation in a changing healthcare environment. We accept applications from a diverse array of professionals, including physicians, lawyers, nurses, clergy and recent college graduates, who seek a deeper understanding of how bioethics can help them make a difference in patients' lives.

⚖️ What happens when an ex*****on by lethal injection goes wrong?

A NEW Hastings Bioethics Forum essay, “Capital Punishment and Lethal Injection: America’s Unethical Answer to an Unethical Punishment,” examines the ethical questions surrounding lethal injection following Tennessee’s failed ex*****on of Christa Pike.

After two doses of phenobarbital didn't end Pike’s life on September 30, she survived the ex*****on attempt and required life-saving medical care. Pike’s lawyers are now calling on Tennessee Governor Bill Lee to commute her sentence to life in prison.

What do these cases reveal about the ethics of lethal injection—and the role of medicine and medical personnel in carrying out capital punishment?

We're looking forward to reconnecting with our friends and colleagues next week at the American Society for Bioethics and Humanities' annual meeting in Indianapolis, Indiana!

Albert Einstein College of Medicine and Montefiore Health System faculty, alumni, students, and MECB Associates will be presenting and as co-authors for multiple sessions, including oral presentations, panels, and moderating affinity group meetings. Safe travels to all attending!

Applications are now being accepted for MECB's 2027 Bioethics Consultation Skills Intensive! This five-day intensive graduate course is designed for healthcare professionals (physicians, nurses, physician assistants, social workers, chaplains, hospital administrators, ethics committee members, lawyers, bioethicists, and trainees) interested in developing or strengthening their clinical ethics consultation skills.Through a combination of didactics, small-group role plays, case-based learning, and personalized feedback, participants will strengthen their communication and consultation skills while learning best practices aligned with the ASBH Core Competencies for Health Care Ethics Consultation. Tuition cost is $2,858.

January 4–8, 2027 | 9:00 AM–5:00 PM ET | Online Intensive
