Happy Friday! In our Fall Friday course, "Literacy through Art Education," students go to museums across New York City to learn how to read art so they can teach it to their students. Here, students in the The Metropolitan Museum of Art are tasked with describing a piece of art to another student who is drawing it based on the descriptions given. An introductory course to Materials and Processes I: Our instructor, Linda Kourkoulis, discusses Understanding by Design (UbD) and Backward Design, Lesson Plan formats, and how to ask open ended questions. Our preservice educator students completed two collage lessons to explore pedagogy-how we immerse students in the experience of the teacher/product driven approach and the learner centered/process based approach. Have you considered teaching art as a profession? Art Ed Curriculum Coordinator, Dr. Linda Kourkoulis is teaching an 'Introduction to Art Education' course that provides an overview of a career in art education in schools, museums, and community arts organizations. The goal of this four-session course is to extend a clear understanding of what the art teaching profession is about-both in theory and practice-through hands-on learning, lectures, and discussions. Topics include artistic exploration, the historical framework of art education, and curriculum planning at all levels (Pre-K to adult), instructional strategies, and classroom management. Participants will have an opportunity to teach a mini-lesson. This course is fully online and offered through synchronous sessions. Follow the link below to sign up:

Happy National Arts in Education week! This year's theme provided by Americans for the Arts is "Every Student, Every Community." At our department orientation, our new students who may have only met once before work together to draw a message. They planned on drawing "I ❤️ ART" and quickly course corrected to draw out "WE ❤️ ART." School of Visual Arts

After the tragic events of 9/11 in New York City twenty-five years ago, the Art Ed department School of Visual Arts received letters from high school students in Japan. These letters sharing prose and drawings from so many years ago remind us how interconnected we all are. How art and education, specifically, are powerful tools to tether communities together across the world. 🍎❤️‍🩹
