Congratulations to Dr. Lorraine Cashin, Katz College Assistant Dean and Director of the M.S. in Physician Assistant Studies, on being named the Leadership category recipient of the inaugural 2026 Alpha Eta Society Faculty Excellence Award!

Alpha Eta is the national honor society for the allied health professions. This new award honors faculty who exemplify excellence, advance their discipline, enhance learning and make a positive impact on their communities. We see this from Dr. Cashin every day at Katz, and we are proud to see it celebrated nationally.

Dr. Cashin will be honored at the Alpha Eta Society Breakfast during the Association of Schools Advancing Health Professions (ASAHP) Annual Meeting in Nashville on Oct. 29 and at the Society's Awards Celebration on Nov. 6.

That's a wrap on the didactic year for the Katz School's M.S. in Physician Assistant Studies Class of 2027!

Last month, students in the Katz School's PA program gathered with faculty and families to mark the milestone. Dr. Lorraine Cashin, PA-C, Assistant Dean and PA Program Director, offered remarks, followed by the cohort president and vice president and a celebration over brunch.

"Our students finish the didactic year having learned to think like clinicians. I have every confidence in the care they will bring to their patients and to the teams they join at our clinical sites," said Dr. Cashin.

The first year of the 86-credit program prepares students to deliver patient-centered care confidently and competently on interdisciplinary health care teams. Didactic lectures are complemented through hands-on training in state-of-the-art virtual cadaver and simulation laboratories, where students work through simulated patient-care experiences.

The clinical year puts that preparation to work. Each student rotates through eight five-week core disciplines and two five-week electives at clinical sites throughout the New York area, spanning family medicine, primary care, internal medicine, surgery, emergency medicine, women's health, pediatrics and behavioral health.

"My journey from rural Zimbabwe to New York City has taught me that limitations are often perceptions waiting to be challenged."

Sandra grew up in Mberengwa, Zimbabwe, and spent six years teaching general education and special education students at the elementary level before serving as Secretary General of the Zimbabwe Sports Association for People with Disabilities, where she worked to expand visibility and opportunity for athletes with disabilities.

She came to the Katz School of Science and Health for a curriculum built on analytics and applied practice, taught by faculty who work in the field. Web Analytics with Professor Sivia Naimer is her favorite class, and Engagement Marketing with Professor Joseph Panzarella showed her how organizations build authentic relationships with the people they serve.

"Every step of my path, from overcoming adversity as an orphan, to becoming a teacher, disability advocate, graduate student, and aspiring marketing professional, has reinforced one belief: people with disabilities are not defined by what they cannot do, but by the possibilities they create when given the opportunity to thrive."

After graduating from the Katz School, Sandra hopes to build a career that combines marketing, advocacy, education, disability inclusion and entrepreneurship.

"I want to use digital marketing and media as tools for social impact, creating campaigns that challenge stereotypes, promote accessibility and amplify voices that are too often overlooked."

Students in the Katz School's M.S. in Cybersecurity visited SPYSCAPE in New York City as part of their Risk Management course, led by Sivan Tehila, program director and CEO/Founder of Onyxia Cyber.

The visit brought core course concepts to life: the history of encryption and the Enigma machine, the Stuxnet attack and its dedicated exhibition, and the third-party and supply chain vulnerabilities that continue to shape enterprise risk today.

"Stuxnet showed me that even if a system is isolated from the internet, it doesn't necessarily mean it is completely safe," one student reflected.

Visits like this reflect the program's emphasis on experiential learning, putting students in real-world scenarios alongside faculty who are active researchers and industry practitioners.

𝗦𝘁𝘂𝗱𝗲𝗻𝘁'𝘀 𝗥𝗲𝘀𝗲𝗮𝗿𝗰𝗵 𝗖𝗵𝗮𝗹𝗹𝗲𝗻𝗴𝗲𝘀 𝗟𝗼𝗻𝗴-𝗛𝗲𝗹𝗱 𝗔𝗱𝘃𝗶𝗰𝗲 𝗔𝗴𝗮𝗶𝗻𝘀𝘁 𝗪𝗵𝗶𝘀𝗽𝗲𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗴

For generations, people with hoarse voices have heard the same advice: don't whisper. But what if that widely accepted recommendation is not fully supported by scientific evidence?

That question inspired Nicole Aziz, a student in the Katz School's M.S. in Speech-Language Pathology, to investigate one of voice therapy's most enduring beliefs. Presented at the Katz School's 2026 Symposium on Science, Technology and Health, her research project, "Hush is Harm? Debunking Whispering Myths in Voice Therapy," examined existing scientific studies to determine whether whispering truly causes more strain or harm to the voice than normal speech.

"Research shows that whispering and normal speech use different physiological mechanisms, but that does not automatically mean whispering is more harmful," said Aziz. "The available evidence is inconsistent, and there is currently no clear consensus that whispering causes greater strain than speaking in all situations."

Her review found that while whispering can be less efficient than normal speech because it requires greater airflow, studies have not consistently demonstrated that it causes more damage to the vocal mechanism. In some circumstances, certain forms of whispering may even be less demanding than speaking loudly or forcefully.

"Voice therapy has evolved significantly over time, but some recommendations continue to be passed down from one generation of clinicians to the next without being rigorously reexamined," said Andrew Christler, Aziz's advisor and a clinical assistant professor in the Katz School's medical speech-language pathology program. "Nicole's work encourages practitioners to revisit the evidence and ensure that patient care reflects what research actually tells us rather than what has simply been accepted for years."
