Hello, my name is Nancy Meza-Torres, and I am a Student Success Mentor and alumni at LaGuardia Community College! Alongside being an SSM, I also work as a Discipline Leader for the Education Department at LaGuardia Community College. I am currently in my second semester at Baruch College studying Master's of Higher Education Administration (MSEd). My first-year experience at LaGuardia Community College started well. When I first came to LaGuardia, I wanted to pursue my associate's in childhood education to get a raise at my old job. At that time, I was working as an assistant teacher at a Pre-K class. During my time at LaGuardia, the staff and faculty taught me to think above and beyond my goals and encouraged us to make a difference for the next generation of students. As a first-generation college student, I never thought of going above and beyond besides working and making money. Seeing staff and faculty who look just like me made me realize everything was possible. Some resources I used to boost my academic and personal success were going to the Writing Center, Tutoring Center, Math Center, CCPD, ASAP, and Health Center. These resources helped me succeed even after I graduated from LaGuardia. I couldn't have done it without the people who work in these departments. If there is one advice, I would give to all my students is to always surround yourselves with positive people. Having positive people in your life will uplift you. You will be able to achieve anything you want while also having people celebrate with you!
