🎬 FILM SCREENING + DIRECTOR Q&A

Join SPS for a special screening of “Tales of Oblivion”, a 2023 documentary by Portuguese filmmaker Dulce Fernandes.

The film brings together two moments in history, enslaved Africans brought ashore in Lagos, Portugal in 1444, and the discovery of their remains centuries later, to examine how the legacies of colonialism continue to shape the present.

✨ Special Guest: Director Dulce Fernandes will join us in person for a Q&A following the screening!

What a great way to kick off the semester! 🎉📚

Yesterday, SPS and Philosophy students and faculty came together in our new student lounge in Conklin 428 for our Welcome Open House! It was wonderful to see such a great turnout and to spend the afternoon connecting over conversation, community, and some delicious light bites, including empanadas and samosas! 🥟✨

Thank you to everyone who stopped by and helped make our first gathering in the new space such a success. We’re looking forward to many more opportunities to connect throughout the semester! 💬📖

SPS is thrilled to announce two incredible Latin American literature courses coming this Fall! Whether you want to hone your creative writing skills in Spanish or dive into iconic works translated into English!

1️⃣ The Latin American Short Story // 21:940:333:40✍️
Instructor: Prof. Veras
When: Mondays | 10:00 AM – 11:20 AM (Hybrid)
What to expect: A blend of literary analysis and hands-on creative writing, taught in Spanish. You’ll analyze iconic short stories, put celebrated authors’ craft theories into practice through writing exercises, and meet contemporary writers firsthand to talk about finding your voice.

2️⃣ Latin American Lit in English Translation // 21:940:250:40
Instructor: Prof. Rivera
When: Mondays | 1:00 PM – 2:20 PM (hybrid)
What to expect: A journey through the “fantastic,” “marvelously real,” and “magically real,” taught in English. Explore influential texts, film, theater, and art from legends like Jorge Luis Borges, Frida Kahlo, Gabriel García Márquez, Reinaldo Arenas, and Lin-Manuel Miranda—no Spanish required!

Join us for A Reading & Celebration of Fernando Pessoa at the Poetry Society of America on May 20 at 7:00 p.m., featuring readings by Patricio Ferrari, John Keene, Idra Novey, Vijay Seshadri, and Mónica de la Torre.

Poems by Fernando Pessoa’s heteronyms and passages from The Book of Disquiet will be read in both English and Portuguese in celebration of one of the most visionary and multifaceted poets of the twentieth century. Books will be available from New Directions Publishing.

🎉 Celebrating 80 years of Rutgers-Newark ()... and 10 years of Lives in Translation ()!

“A Feeling of Itself”, a three-part program developed by Project for Empty Space (), Lives in Translation (), and the Design Consortium at Rutgers University–Newark, is unfolding across multiple Newark sites from March through June. 🌟

A Feeling of Itself explores the richness and complexity of living between languages and is rooted in the concept of “arraigo,” which is a sense of belonging shaped through one’s roots. Through bilingual interviews, photography, typography, and data visualization, the exhibition illuminates how translation becomes a powerful form of cultural connection. It brings together data on languages spoken across Rutgers campuses, the city of Newark, and the state of New Jersey, alongside student-generated text reflecting the lived experiences of multilingual speakers and their role as language brokers.

A Feeling of Itself celebrates multilingualism as a creative and civic strength that defines Newark’s past, present, and future.

The exhibition is open until June 1, 2026, at Project for Empty Space , 800 Broad St., Tuesday-Friday, 11am-6pm.
