🎉 Celebrating 80 years of Rutgers-Newark ()... and 10 years of Lives in Translation ()!

“A Feeling of Itself”, a three-part program developed by Project for Empty Space (), Lives in Translation (), and the Design Consortium at Rutgers University–Newark, is unfolding across multiple Newark sites from March through June. 🌟

A Feeling of Itself explores the richness and complexity of living between languages and is rooted in the concept of “arraigo,” which is a sense of belonging shaped through one’s roots. Through bilingual interviews, photography, typography, and data visualization, the exhibition illuminates how translation becomes a powerful form of cultural connection. It brings together data on languages spoken across Rutgers campuses, the city of Newark, and the state of New Jersey, alongside student-generated text reflecting the lived experiences of multilingual speakers and their role as language brokers.

A Feeling of Itself celebrates multilingualism as a creative and civic strength that defines Newark’s past, present, and future.

The exhibition is open until June 1, 2026, at Project for Empty Space , 800 Broad St., Tuesday-Friday, 11am-6pm.

Last Thursday, LiT and DC debuted their first ever on-campus exhibition “A Feeling Of Itself” in the lobby of 110 Warren Hall! Attendees were immersed in an interactive audiovisual exhibit which highlighted the importance, nuances, and intricacies of multilingualism. Among the languages being showcased were Spanish, Portuguese, and Hindi. Keynote speaker Mr. Ibrahima Traore and live music performer/storyteller Yeimy Castillo both beautifully contributed to the running themes of language, identity, immigration, and cultural legacy in their addresses to the crowd. Attendees were also invited to participate in a short interview with The Newark Story Bus, who’s mission is to hare and collect rich stories that make Newark a global city. The exhibit remains on display in the lobby of 110 Warren Hall for those who would like to check it out!
