The SciDome at The Works just went beyond the stars. 🧠✨
Ohio State students Adyson Erzurum and Pratap Uppalapati created the facility's first-ever show focused outside of physics or astronomy. Developed in collaboration with Melissa Buelow, PhD, and Jennifer M Kowalsky, PhD, for the K–12 Brain Workshop at The Works: Ohio Center for History, Art & Technology, the program took audiences on an immersive journey into brain science.
Pratap shared how the project pushed the boundaries of the dome's technology:
"Exploring brain anatomy on the dome was a fantastic project that showcased the SciDome's potential beyond astrophysics and astronomy. Developing this program presented unique challenges that broadened our capabilities. It was a pleasure collaborating with Ohio State Newark’s psychology faculty, and we look forward to expanding our interdisciplinary work with the community!"
Adyson highlighted how the experience allowed her to merge science and creative design:
“This experience was very rewarding, as it allowed me to apply my skills in both science and art. I drew on my experience in science communication, which I gained through creating previous planetarium shows using Digistar, and combined it with my skills in digital art and Photoshop to create images and icons that took the show a step further and helped bring its story to life. I also learned new skills, such as using Audacity to record, organize, and edit audio and sound effects. Overall, this experience showed me how effectively I can combine my interests in science and art to communicate ideas in an engaging way.”
