September is National Recovery Month! Recovery from drug and alcohol use is a voluntary commitment to a sober lifestyle. At UD, one of the resources available to support students who are looking to make changes in their alcohol or drug use is the Collegiate Recovery Community at UD. The CRC provides a safe and confidential environment to discuss topics and ideas supportive of recovery and connects students with others who have the same values in life. Looking for support for recovery from things other than alcohol or drug use? The CRC also provides support for students in recovery from eating disorders, mental health concerns, gaming, gambling, etc...for more info, visit udel.edu/studentwellness

Social Wellness helps us to feel connected to and to contribute to our community. For many of us, going to UD gives us the opportunity to become a part of new communities. While we explore our new surroundings and build new friendships it is important to stay connected to our communities back home. These people are our support network who can help us with any struggles we may have and will be there to support us when we return home. We encourage you to find creative ways to bring your friends and family along with you on your journey.

PD: This post is an animated video. In the first scene, there is a blue background with the heading, “Keep in touch with your support system.” Under the heading reads, “Your UD family is here for you! But it’s important to connect to those back home while you’re away.” From the bottom center of the screen, an envelope comes onto screen, it opens up and a letter emerges from the top of the envelope. In the second scene, there is a picture of a woman holding an iPhone in her hands. On the screen of the iphone, she is video-chatting with a woman chopping vegetables in preparation for cooking a meal. The background is blue and there is a heading that reads, “Utilize your smart device, and find time to connect with family and friends from back home.” In the third and final scene, there is the image of a woman using a laptop. On the laptop screen you can see the image of a person resting an open book on their legs and writing in the book. There is a blue background with the heading that reads, “Journal about your college experience to share with your loved ones.”

Today we come together as a UD community to remember and honor those lost in the 9/11 terror attacks 20 years ago. We honor the lives of those we lost, support those who are grieving, and remain grateful for those who worked and continue to work to keep us safe.

“Recovery Ally training is important for our social wellness because it shows people in recovery that there is a place for them here at UD. It allows us to meet other people in recovery as well as people who care about those in recovery or who struggle with addition. It makes us feel like we belong.” - Miriam Hechtam, UD Class of 2022

PD: In the bottom left corner there is a round picture. The picture is three baseball caps sitting on a table. The caps are all gray and have a patch on the front center of the hat. The patch shows a fist clenching a lightning bolt and embroidered text that reads, “Recovery is Real.” Overlapping that circle is another circular image to the upper right. Inside that circle is a photo of two women. The woman on the left is wearing a yellow t-shirt that has the same image of the gray fist clenching a yellow lighting bolt. The woman to the right is wearing one of the gray baseball caps. The background is navy blue. In the top left corner is a heading that says, “Recovery is Real” in yellow text. In the bottom right corner is yellow text that reads, “International Overdose Awareness Day.”
