University of Delaware Political Science and International Relations

University of Delaware Political Science and International Relations Welcome to Political Science and International Relations at the University of Delaware. We now house the European0 Studies major and Legal Studies minor.

Welcome to the University of Delaware Department of Political Science and International Relations (POSCIR). We are excited about what's happening here, and we think you will be, too! Our faculty of nationally and internationally recognized scholars and professors publish with acclaimed presses and journals and regularly receive awards for research and teaching. We focus on four primary fields in o

ur graduate and undergraduate programs: International Relations, Comparative Politics, American Politics, and Political Theory. Much of our work is interdisciplinary, including special strengths in global governance, political psychology, gender and politics, and inequality and social justice. Our highly diverse graduate student community adds vibrancy to the department, as we remain committed to recruiting the best US and internationally-based students. POSCIR graduate students work closely with faculty, regularly presenting their work at regional and national conferences, as well as providing them the opportunity to teach their own courses. After finishing their degrees, most of our doctoral students go on to teach at universities across the US and the world, with the rest working at research institutions or government agencies. Our undergraduate program is one of the largest at UD, with our students routinely receiving recognition for work both within and outside of the university. Currently offering two majors, Political Science and International Relations, we have added new courses including opportunities to study the politics of social justice and political psychology. We are also partners in the UD Center for Political Communication and offer minors for non-majors, giving students even more ways to connect across fields. Our new Political Communication Ph.D. program offers the graduate level this same multi-departmental experience. Our undergraduate majors have the highest four year graduation rate of all departments, also showing significantly lower disparities in graduation rates across different groups of students. Our commitment to our students is at the core of what we do, and is reflected in our hands-on advising team. Thank you for your interest in our department and the University of Delaware. We hope you will visit us in person (Smith Hall 347), as well as on our website. Located in Newark, Delaware, UD is centrally positioned between Philadelphia, Baltimore, Washington, D.C., and New York City. UD POSCIR is on the move, so come be part of these exciting times!

Student Spotlight: Robin Archangelo is a first-year Honors student double majoring in international relations and history with a minor in philosophy💙💛

On campus, Robin is involved with Kappa Alpha Pi, a pre-law and government fraternity, and currently serves as a Campus Civic Engagement Intern for TogetherinWitness, a micro-press dedicated to encouraging conversations surrounding civics and socio-political issues through literature.

One of the most impactful experiences in Robin’s recent work was helping coordinate a discussion event featuring author Pelumi Olatinpo and his work, Manifest Destiny. In collaboration with Kappa Alpha Pi and TogetherinWitness, the event explored themes of self-identity, American history, and modern conflict.

Robin discovered the internship opportunity through Handshake and was drawn to TogetherinWitness’s mission of fostering meaningful dialogue about political and social issues. Similarly, Kappa Alpha Pi stood out as an opportunity to connect with other students interested in politics, law, and public service.

A standout course for Robin has been POSC 240: Global Politics with Professor Ellerby. Through hands-on simulations, the Honors course explored how nations interact and cooperate on a global scale. “The class really showed me the nuance behind global politics and helped me understand current events in a broader context,” Robin shared.

This summer, Robin will continue expanding those global perspectives while studying abroad in Dublin, Ireland, focusing on Ireland’s political culture and modern history through HIST 373 and POSC 309. Robin will also serve as an Edge Mentor for UD’s high school summer program and begin training as a Munson Fellow, mentoring incoming Honors students during the 2026–2027 academic year.

Stay tuned this summer as Robin takes us along their journey studying abroad in Dublin! ☘️✈️

This Wednesday, our students visited Washington, D.C., beginning the day on Capitol Hill with visits to the offices of U.S. Senator Chris C***s and U.S. Senator Lisa Blunt Rochester. There, they met with staff and learned more about careers in public service.

The group then toured Union Station with Amtrak staff, gaining insight into one of the city’s busiest transportation hubs.

In the afternoon, students heard from alumni working in non-government roles across the D.C. area. Thank you to our panelists for sharing their experiences and advice:
• Catherine Navabi ’09
• Micah Petersen ’17
• Michael Poosikian ’22
• David Tully ’08

The day concluded with a reception bringing together students and alumni, generously hosted by Nate Herman ’92 at the American Apparel & Footwear Association.

A special thank you to David Tully ’08 for guiding the group throughout the day and helping ensure everything ran smoothly.

Experiences like this offer students a closer look at career pathways and the many directions a UD degree can take them.

Thanks to the work of the POSCIR External Advisory Board, this experience was made possible 💙💛
