Women’s History Month Spotlight:
Dr. Wangari Maathai 🌍🌿

This week, our Women With STEAM series honors Dr. Wangari Maathai, a trailblazer in environmental activism and the first female professor in Kenya. As the first African woman to receive the Nobel Peace Prize, her legacy lives on through the Green Belt Movement, which has planted over 51 million trees in Kenya since 1977. 🌱✨

Dr. Maathai’s work reminds us that science, activism, and community action can create lasting change. Despite facing resistance in chilly climates—both in academia and activism—she never backed down, proving that perseverance can break barriers just like trees can break through even the toughest soil. Today, her efforts continue to combat climate change, showing us that one person’s vision can grow into a movement that transforms the world.

How will you use your passion for STEAM to make an impact?

Stay tuned every Wednesday this month as we continue to highlight inspiring women in STEAM!

From Ideas to Impact: Honors Scholars Lead the Way in Biodiversity! 🌍🐝

Last week, our first-year Honors scholars showcased their innovative biodiversity proposals, presenting sustainable solutions to enhance NJIT’s campus ecosystem and increase biodiversity!💡🏵️

A huge congratulations to all six finalist teams for their thoughtful designs—and an extra shoutout to Insect Isle, this year’s winning proposal! 🏆 Their project will create a pollinator-friendly habitat near Faculty Memorial Hall, supporting native insects like monarch butterflies and primrose moths. 🦋🌼

These student-driven initiatives, backed by NJIT’s Urban Ecology Lab and NJIT’ Real Estate Development & Capital Operations, are shaping a greener, more sustainable campus. We can’t wait to see Insect Isle come to life next fall when our incoming first-year students have their planting day! 🌿✨

Celebrating Women in STEAM!
👩🏽‍🔬👩🏻‍🏭👩🏾‍🔧👩🏿‍⚕️👩🏼‍💻✨

This Women’s History Month, our Women With STEAM group is spotlighting trailblazing women who have shaped science, technology, engineering, arts, and mathematics.

Meet Katharine Blodgett, a pioneer in physics whose discoveries continue to impact the world today. As the first woman to earn a Ph.D. in physics from the University of Cambridge, she went on to develop the first-ever nonreflective glass as a research scientist at General Electric. Her innovation paved the way for advancements in cameras, eyeglasses, windshields, and even space technology. 🚀🔬

Blodgett’s story is a testament to perseverance, curiosity, and breaking barriers. How will you push the boundaries of STEAM?

Stay tuned every Wednesday this month as we highlight more inspiring women in STEAM!

Happy Women’s History Month! ✨ Today marks the start of a month dedicated to honoring the achievements of women past, present, and future. Get ready to mark your calendars!

We’re kicking things off with two exciting events this week, co-sponsored by Women with STEAM:

📅 Wednesday, March 5 – Colloquium featuring our very own Honors University Lecturer, Dr. Emily Tancredi-Brice Agbenyega.

📅 Friday, March 7 – NJIT’s Murray Center is hosting the Women Designing the Future conference, where Honors Scholars can attend different sessions throughout the day.

Honors Scholars should register for both events in Suitable.

Looking ahead, Women with STEAM will also host a networking event on April 3—open to any Honors Scholars interested in connecting with and empowering women in STEAM fields!

Let’s celebrate, learn, and connect all month long!

“PLVS VLTRA”—“More Beyond.”
These words, tiled above a fireplace in Fonthill Castle, embody the spirit of Henry Mercer: a man who pushed beyond conventional boundaries to create something truly remarkable. Last week, Albert Dorman Honors College at NJIT scholars embarked on a study tour to the Mercer Museum & Fonthill Castle, exploring how Mercer’s passion for history, craftsmanship, and innovation continues to inspire new generations. 💫🏰

📌Junior (CS) reflected on the power of interdisciplinary learning: “One key lesson I learned from this colloquium is the importance of gaining expertise in multiple fields rather than limiting myself to just one. This connects to Mercer since he took the opportunity to explore many different subjects he was interested in, like architecture, history, and religion. This perspective is important for my career path because it encourages me to learn about fields outside my chosen major. It reminds me that being well-rounded and intellectually curious can provide me with valuable opportunities in my education and future career.”

📌Sophomore Grace Nigro (CE) connected the experience to both her civil engineering studies and historical appreciation: “I gained a deeper appreciation for the versatility of concrete. Both museums were constructed using concrete due to its malleability, fire resistance, and affordability at the time. As a civil engineering major, I will likely work with concrete in my career, and seeing its creative application in these structures was truly inspiring. This experience will stay with me as I continue my design journey in civil engineering. Additionally, exploring Mercer’s collection provided valuable insight into daily life before the Industrial Revolution.”

Much like Henry Mercer, our students continue to embrace the “More Beyond” mindset—seeking knowledge across disciplines, pushing creative boundaries, and finding inspiration in unexpected places.

🐔❄️ Honors Scholars + Urban Agriculture = An Egg-cellent Experience! 🌱🥚

Our STS 325 scholars braved the snow for an unforgettable site visit to Newark Science and Sustainability! 🌍✨ From collecting and counting eggs to prepping food for the chickens, they got a hands-on lesson in sustainable farming and community impact. And yes—they even got to hold a chicken! 🐓🤗

Shoutout to Melissa for hosting us and providing an amazing tour! This is experiential learning at its finest—because as Shreya put it, “Thanks to the Honors College, I got to see where my food comes from!” 😆
