ALUMNI SPOTLIGHT: Dr. Alex Popov, AUA Class of 2018

Before he was Dr. Popov, he spent more than a decade as a licensed physical therapist in New York, treating patients recovering from spine injuries, strokes, surgeries, and neuromuscular conditions. Then he decided to become a physician.

After earning his MD from AUA, Dr. Popov completed his internal medicine residency at Overland Park Regional Medical Center in Kansas. He then returned to New York as a hospitalist at Montefiore Mount Vernon Hospital, caring for medically complex patients.

Today he's an internal medicine physician at NexGen Orthopedics & Pain Management in New York and New Jersey, where his two careers come together. He evaluates and manages spine, joint, and chronic pain conditions, and he's training in interventional spine and venous procedures. He also still works shifts as a hospitalist at Montefiore.

He's fluent in Russian, speaks conversational Spanish, and is a classically trained violinist.

Congratulations, Dr. Popov. Your path shows it's never too late to pursue medicine!

Day 2 at the World Health Summit 2026 in Berlin.

Every sector is at the table: clinicians, academicians, entrepreneurs, policymakers and representatives of international bodies and companies. AUA President Dr. Peter Bell shares his reflections:

“The resulting discussions range from disaster preparedness, health financing, policy making to epidemiology. Especially interesting are considerations of health as investment, health care workforce surge initiatives and collaboration between public and private sectors.

Within Europe, Germany is a significant proponent of Global Health and is the largest financial contributor within the EU. Participation at WHS of the German Federal Minister for Economic Cooperation and Development, Ms. Alabali-Radovan, and Germany’s Chancellor Mr. Merz are a testimony of this engagement.

Proud to represent American University of Antigua on this stage.”
— Peter Bell, MD, President, American University of Antigua

New publication from AUA!

Congratulations to our students and faculty whose review, “The Global Emergence of Trichophyton indotineae: Epidemiology, Resistance, and Management Challenges,” is now published in Frontiers in Tropical Diseases.

T. indotineae is an emerging fungus behind chronic, recurring skin infections that often don’t respond to terbinafine, the drug long used to treat them. First linked to outbreaks in India, it has since been reported across Asia, the Middle East, Europe, and North America.

The review examines how the pathogen has spread, the gene mutations that let it resist common antifungals, and why accurate molecular identification and susceptibility testing matter for avoiding treatment failure. It also calls for antifungal stewardship, international surveillance, and coordinated public health action to slow its spread.

Congratulations to Adnan Omar, Michelle Singh, Srinidhi Ramasamy, Merin Chandanathil, Chandana Bhargavi, Nagaraj Mysore, and Dr. Prasanna Honnavar, and to co-authors Dipika Shaw (Uma Nath Singh Autonomous State Medical College) and Dharam Bir (Indiana University School of Medicine).
