Anyone at any age can get depression but elderly depression is the main focus of this video. For many old people depression is a significant health problem but is isn’t because of age. Depression can be built with many emotions built together can be from something as big as losing a family member or something even like living in fear, being worried about the future. Depression is underdiagnosed because it is complex and unrecognized. Different ways to help elders fight their depression is by talking to them, showing care and emotions asking them questions, rewarding them, and taking care of them. Although elders are much older than us they should not be treated any different the deserve the same amount of love and care that the younger community give one another. People tend to overlook the elders because they are old.

“The charity Campaign to End Loneliness says that one million of us are already suffering from acute loneliness, while two and a half million over 60s fear they could end up similarly isolated”. 91 year old Margaret and Roy were the two elders used for this video and they both suffer from loneliness. The two of the explain how they feel, what they miss, and what was their life like before being alone. They both express a lot of sad emotions, neither of them can measure the loneliness. Margaret lost her husband two years ago and they were best friends they did everything together she said. Roy lost his only son to cancer and his wife of 50 years passed away after that. Roy says that he is always waiting for his wife to come through the door. Although the two are lonely they do have people who call them and check up on them at least once a day, but it still is not the same.

Although phone banking has its pros and cons here are some positives. This was more a website description on phone banking and its benefits. One of the phone banking services is called “Be a friend” this is phone calls for shut-ins, elderly and the lonely- calling service for the lonely. This is designed for elders who are lonely, isolated, immobile, recovering from surgery, etc. They try to reach out 5 to 7 days a week.

It’s when someone from our staff calls you or your loved one up 5 or 7 days a week in the spirit of being compassionate and friendly.

Phone banking is when people volunteer to do a list calling for all types of events whether it’s for elders, voting or even a survey. “Advanced phone banking tools are software based. Volunteers can log into the system through their computers and make calls through their browser if need be. The system handles assigning voters to agents, displaying accurate information about the voter and storing all the feedback from the call. Phone banking tools help you save time by calling the number for you and skipping bad numbers, answering machines if required and busy numbers.”

This article focuses on the safety of the elders. It is similar to the “Be a friend” article according to this article hundreds of police agencies in small towns, suburbs and rural areas are checking in on seniors who live alone by placing an automated call to them every day.” The goal here is to make sure the elders in our population aren't forgotten about and still taken care of. The article also states ““It helps ensure for the elderly person or their family that a phone call is being made every morning, that everything is okay. We’ve gotten incredible feedback on this program,” said Cmdr. Jack Vaccaro of the Lighthouse Point Police Department in Florida, which has nine seniors in its automated daily-call program.”, so therefore if something like this is getting really good results why not continue it and try to even improve it, if possible.

Police departments in many communities offer this service as aging populations increase.
