SCCC held a ribbon-cutting for its new Chemistry Lab this week. The space will provide SCCC STEM and nursing students with a modern chemistry laboratory that reflects the environments they will encounter at four-year universities and in their future careers. For students preparing to transfer, access to current equipment and hands-on laboratory experience is essential to ensuring they are confident and well prepared for the next step in their education.

The renovated lab now features six fume hoods, dedicated glassware storage at each workstation, and additional space for laboratory equipment. The expanded layout also allows SCCC to relocate other equipment into a former lab, creating a safer, more organized, and effective learning environment.

🎓 Student Spotlight: Jairo Hernandez-Ulloa
Jairo Hernandez-Ulloa’s journey to Sussex County Community College reflects perseverance, determination, and a commitment to creating a brighter future. After immigrating from Honduras to the United States at age 17, Jairo faced the challenges of adapting to a new language, culture, and environment while building a life on his own. He learned English, earned his high school equivalency credential, and took the next step by enrolling at SCCC to study Psychology.

Now an NJALL 2026 Scholarship recipient, Jairo is working toward his associate degree while gaining valuable healthcare experience. He currently works full-time as a Medical Assistant with Atlantic Health Medical Group.

After completing his degree at Sussex, Jairo plans to continue his education through a 3+1 transfer pathway with Ramapo College and ultimately pursue a career in psychology or community health. His story demonstrates how determination, education, and opportunity can come together to create a new path forward.
