🎃☕ Pumpkin spice is officially back! I had all things pumpkin at Starbucks!

And whether you’ve been waiting all year for it—or think September is way too early—there’s something about that first pumpkin spice latte that tells us:

Fall is here. 🍂

New seasons can be exciting. They can also be an invitation to notice what our families need.

Maybe this fall it’s not about adding more.

Maybe it’s about creating a little more margin.

More unhurried conversations.
More dinners around the table.
More listening before fixing.
More room for big feelings.
More moments when our kids know they are loved simply because they belong.

So grab the pumpkin spice. ☕
Light the fall candle. 🍁
And remember that some of the most important moments with our kids happen in the ordinary spaces in between.

August ends today. And for a lot of families, the hard part is just beginning. 🍂

The backpacks are packed.
The schedules are full.
The first-day pictures have been posted.

But underneath all of that, some families are already feeling it.

A child who suddenly doesn’t want to go to school.
More tears, irritability or arguing at home.
A teenager who seems quieter than usual.
Parents wondering why everyone is exhausted—and it’s only August.

Here’s what I want families to know:

Transitions require more from a child’s nervous system than we sometimes realize.

New teachers. New expectations. Earlier mornings. Social pressures. Homework. Sports. Activities. Less downtime.

Sometimes what looks like defiance, attitude, or “bad behavior” is actually a child saying:

“I’m overwhelmed, and I don’t know how to tell you.”

As we close August and step into September, perhaps the goal doesn’t have to be getting everything right.

Maybe it’s creating a home where children know:

🤍 I belong here.
🤍 My feelings can be talked about.
🤍 Mistakes don’t change how loved I am.
🤍 The adults in my life can help me find calm again.

BACK TO SCHOOL CAN BRING BIG FEELINGS. 🍎

Sometimes the signs are obvious and some are not. Here are some you may have seen:

• Tears or meltdowns after school
• “I don’t want to go tomorrow.”
• Worry about grades or making mistakes

• Irritability once they get home
• Trouble adjusting to a new classroom or routine

The end of summer can bring more than excitement…

It can also bring grief.

For many children, August isn’t just “back to school.” It’s saying goodbye to slower mornings, family time, vacations, and the predictability of home…… ANd World Cup.

And for parents?

You’re juggling school supplies, schedules, sports, homework, work demands, and the quiet hope that this school year will be different.

Here’s what neuroscience reminds us:

🧠 Every transition—even a positive one—is a stressor for the brain.

That means you may see:
• More meltdowns
• Increased anxiety
• Irritability
• Withdrawal
• Trouble sleeping
• Bigger emotions over seemingly small things

It doesn’t mean something is wrong.

It means your child’s nervous system is adjusting.

This week, before asking,
“Are you ready for school?”

Try asking,
“What feels exciting?”
“What feels a little hard?”
“How can I help you feel safe this week?”

Children don’t need perfect parents during transitions.

They mostly need regulated parents.

As summer comes to a close, remember: connection calms the brain before correction ever can.

We’re reminded today that home isn’t just a place—it’s what we build in the middle of uncertainty.

Even when things feel unsettled, we can still choose peace in our words, patience in our responses, and grace in how we show up for others.

Hope doesn’t ask for perfect conditions. It asks for steady hearts.

And home begins there.

The other day, my son casually informed me that this summer he plans on doing both club swim and soccer. 😅

And in that moment, I realized how quickly summer was already starting to fill up.

Practices. Schedules. Carpools. Late dinners. Trying to balance fun, growth, family time, and rest.

As parents, sometimes the pace picks up before we emotionally catch up to it.

And while sports and activities can be wonderful for kids — building confidence, friendships, discipline, and resilience — it can also quietly create stress for the entire family when life starts moving too fast.

What I’ve noticed as both a parent and someone who works with families is this:

Kids don’t just need opportunities.
They also need margin.

So do parents.

As summer begins, I’m reminding myself:
🤍 Not every moment has to be optimized
🤍 Rest is productive too
🤍 Connection matters more than a packed calendar
🤍 Home should still feel peaceful in the middle of busy seasons

Sometimes the healthiest thing we can do is pause long enough to ask:
“Is our family still breathing well in this season?”

Summer doesn’t need to be perfect to be meaningful.
