Some days, the best way forward is to show up for each other. That’s what we’ve seen across our community in the weeks since March 12, in quiet check-ins, in support, in simply being there for our community.

Tomorrow’s blood drive is one more way to do that. If you’re able, we hope you’ll join us.

Because care isn’t just what we study or practice. It’s what we do for each other.

The Ellmer College of Health Sciences gathered to celebrate the season with an evening full of surprises!
✨ Our guest judges for the festive attire contest were children — and they took their job very seriously.
✨ The holiday door contest brought out incredible creativity across the college.
✨ Congratulations to the School of Exercise Science for achieving 100% participation!
✨ And congrats to the Best in Show Holiday Door winner — the Snoopy door created by student worker Mackenzi Dellolio for tech support’s own Matt Soricelli.

But the biggest surprise of the night?
🎁 The Grinch handing out the prizes was actually Dean Bonnie Van Lunen!

Thank you to our faculty and staff for a warm, joyful celebration. Happy Holidays from Ellmer College! ❄️🎄

The HEROES Initiative is building a collaborative home for research that strengthens the mental, social and physical health of veterans, military and first responders. Researchers from across Old Dominion University came together today to map out how their work fits within this holistic triangle and how expertise connects from the micro level to broader community systems.

As Virginia’s largest academic health sciences center, located in a region with one of the nation’s highest concentrations of active-duty military and veterans, ODU is uniquely positioned to lead this work. Dr. Chris Rhea outlined the next step: building a clear roadmap of expertise and working together to explore partnerships and external funding opportunities.

This afternoon’s small-group discussions showed just how much brainpower is already aligned. And now the real work of the HEROES Initiative begins.

Happy Veterans Day, Monarchs! 🇺🇸

Today we pause to honor all who have served, and to thank the veterans who strengthen our Old Dominion University community every day.

More than 900 students and 93 faculty and staff at ODU are veterans. Their presence enriches our classrooms, clinics, and research across the University.

The Ellmer College of Health Sciences is proud to share that Tyler Mobley, a Navy veteran and exercise science major, was chosen to receive the flag at this year’s University Veterans Day Observance — an honor presented to one veteran each year. His example reflects the dedication and spirit shared by so many Monarch veterans.

Today we pause to honor World Mental Health Day — a reminder that empathy, understanding, and connection are vital to healing.

At Old Dominion University, that work starts in the classroom. In the Doctor of Occupational Therapy program, students are using AI-powered simulations to practice engaging with clients who experience PTSD, anxiety, depression, and schizophrenia — learning that technology can be a powerful tool for compassion.
