The Art Department at ODU empowers students to become critical visual thinkers through creative practice and professional preparation in a diverse and collaborative environment. The department sustains a diverse and distinguished faculty committed to excellence in teaching, scholarship, and creative activity in their respective fields of expertise, which include art history, art education, graphic

design and studio disciplines such as drawing, painting, printmaking, photography and 3D media. The low student to faculty ratio enables more individualized and collaborative instruction. We also offer a consistent and active program of events which enrich our classes, including visiting artists, speakers, workshops, exhibitions, and study abroad programs.

We’re excited to share Envisioning Revolution: Individuals in Action — an interdisciplinary collaboration between ODU Art and the Library of Virginia.
Taught by Assistant Professor Kyle Kogut, the course brought together 7 undergraduate and graduate students to work with newly digitized petitions from 1776–1786, researching and creating artworks inspired by the real individuals behind these historic documents. Through drawing, painting, and mixed media works, students explored the lives and voices that shaped early American democracy.
As part of the course, students traveled to conduct research and experience historical collections and sites firsthand, helping inform the development of their work.
The exhibition opens June 13, 2026, as part of the statewide VA250 commemoration.
Congratulations to all of the student artists involved! We’re proud to see this work shared with a broader public audience.

Pierce received her BFA and BA in 3-D Material Studies and Art Education from Old Dominion University in 2023. Her work explores the relationship between tactile material and narratives of resilience, intimacy, and the quiet strength in story-sharing. Pierce received a 2022 VMFA Undergraduate Fellowship Award and was named an NCECA and NAEA Multicultural Fellow. Her experience encompasses participation in various national workshops and collectives, along with extensive work as an invited artist and instructor at museums, galleries, and educational spaces throughout the Hampton Roads area.

Based in Virginia Beach, painter and graphic illustrator Matthew S. Pierce (b. 1995) creates portraits stemming from an internal landscape deeply influenced by the internet. Hakenschlagen is a German word describing the zig-zag direction of a rabbit in flight. The works displayed channel the phenomenon of movement, describing a chase. The paintings are marked with alternating periods of spontaneity and control. The canvases are laid unstretched and directly against the wall, supporting a dense structure of added textures using paper and canvas, folded, bunched, and cut to be stacked on top of each other. The viewer is invited to parse the figures of this narrative through complex, maximal collage-compositions, like attempting to peer at animals through foliage.
