Old Dominion University School of Dental Hygiene Established in 1967, the Gene W. We offer 3 programs: entry-level BSDH, post-licensure BSDH and MSDH.

Hite Jones, RDH, BSDH, MS is originally from Clarksville, VA ,and has been a dental hygienist for almost 2 and half years now working full-time at CCL Family Dentistry and part-time as an adjunct professor in the ODU School of Dental Hygiene. She was a graduate teaching assistant for the program from 2024-2026 where she completed her master’s degree in dental hygiene and completed her thesis research titled, “Perceptions of US Dentists and Dental Hygienists Towards Workforce Shortage Policies” under the direction of her chair, Assistant Professor Emily Ludwig. Hite was awarded second place in the ADHA26/Dentsply Sirona Graduate Student Clinician’s Research Program for her research and attended the ADHA annual conference in Fort Worth, Texas to receive the award.

🎉 Congratulations to Dr. Denise McKinney and Dr. Melissa Sullivan on their recent grant award!

Dr. McKinney, Lead PI, and Dr. Sullivan, Co-PI, from the Gene W. Hirschfeld School of Dental Hygiene will collaborate with colleagues from the Joint School of Public Health and the University of Texas at Arlington on the project, “Addressing Access to Preventative Dental Care for Low-Income Pregnant Women.”

The project will work with WIC clients to address barriers to preventive dental care and support improved access to oral health services during pregnancy.

The interdisciplinary research team also includes Dr. Abdullah Al-Taiar (Co-PI) and Dr. Futun Alkhalifah (Co-I) from the Joint School of Public Health, and Dr. May Salama (Co-I) from the University of Texas at Arlington.

👏 Congratulations to the entire team on this important work to advance oral health access for pregnant women in our communities!
