ODU English Language Center

ODU English Language Center Study English to achieve your academic, personal, and professional goals at the Old Dominion Univers

Since it was founded in 1981, the English Language Center (ELC) at Old Dominion University has taught thousands of students from nearly 100 countries. The ELC welcomes all students and is eager to assist them in pursuing personal, career and/or academic goals through their study of English. The ELC offers full and part-time courses in English as a Second Language. There is an Intensive Program for

students who need in-depth study of English and a Bridge Program for students who have been conditionally accepted by the University. In addition, the ELC also offers a course in TOEFL Preparation, and specially designed courses for professionals or groups of university students. The ELC also sponsors a Conversation Partner program in which international students are paired with Americans to practice their English in informal settings. Learning English can be facilitated and enriched by student participation in out-of-classroom activities. For this reason, many extracurricular activities are available such as trips to widely acclaimed museums, gardens, beach resort areas, sports, cultural events, and Washington, D.C. In addition to these outings, students are encouraged to participate in the many activities and sports events offered by the University. The ELC prides itself on its experienced and highly qualified faculty. All ELC instructors have masters' degrees, and many have lived and taught English all over the world. ELC faculty are observed and consulted as model teachers by both U.S. and international teachers of ESL.

- Admission to the ELC is open to non-native speakers of English who are 18 or older or who have high school diplomas or the equivalent. The English Language Center is an accepted member of both AAIEP and UCIEP, professional agencies which select schools for membership based on their adherence to the highest standards of professional and academic excellence.

🔥 New Course for Spring 2026!

CGE 496 – Language and Revolution: English in the Age of American Independence
📘 3 Credits | CRN 33422 | Tues & Thurs 3:00–4:15 PM

How did the American Revolution change the English language—and how did language help shape the Revolution?

In this course, you’ll explore the words, sounds, and ideas that helped build a new nation. Discover how English evolved during this time of radical change—from spelling and pronunciation shifts to the rise of uniquely American expressions and political rhetoric. You’ll also learn about the voices often left out of the story, including Native American languages and the early roots of African American English.

As part of the VA250 celebrations marking 250 years since the Revolution, we’ll take part in special events, guest talks, and hands-on learning experiences that connect history, language, and identity.

✅ Open to all majors—no linguistics background required!
Perfect for students curious about:

- How language reflects culture and history

- The origins of American English and slang

- Differences between British and American English

- Language teaching, writing, or communication

Note: This course can count toward the upper-division general education requirement (Option D).

Students in our Intensive English Program manage lots of new vocabulary every week, but that doesn’t stop them from having some fun with it! Is that doodle showing a BOOMING business or UNPRECEDENTED wealth? EXCESSIVE work or mental STRAIN? Shoppers FLOCKING to a sale or OVERRUNNING a store? Half the fun is making new connections between words and images. 🔗
