Senior Geology major Genna Warnick just completed a 5-day mapping project in the Westfjords of Iceland. Funded by an ISU FIREbird Grant, and joined by Paul Meister and Dr. Tenley Banik, Genna’s first foray into mapping focused on describing and delineating a rhyolite and several basalts in a previously unmapped area. High points included amazing views, daily improvement in notetaking, and “Bear Grylls”ing through Icelandic forests and streams in search of outcrop; low points included stepping on a beehive (only 1 sting!) and sore feet. Genna will present her map, along with zircon data from the rhyolite unit, at the GSA Connects conference this fall.

We are of the CAS contributions to a green infrastructure project that will benefit the City of Bloomington, especially residents of the Dimmitt’s Grove neighborhood! 💚

With cooperation from several groups including Illinois State University Geography and Illinois State University Department of Sociology and Anthropology, a groundbreaking 🪏 for the project was held last week. The end product will be a new rain garden to mitigate flooding and improve water quality!

To end the semester, we are celebrating the achievement of undergraduate Caleb Ortman! Caleb recently received the Bone Scholarship from ISU! The Bone scholarship is the highest achievement a student can receive in the time as an undergraduate, with only 14 students selected each year. Congratulations, Caleb! The future is bright! ✨️
