Department of Psychology at Illinois State University Jesse W. Fell took up the campaign for Bloomington and obtained financial backing totaling $141,000.

On February 18, 1857, Governor William Bissell of Illinois signed a bill creating a normal school and establishing the Board of Education of
the State of Illinois as its governing body. The bill stipulated that the permanent location would be the place that offered the most favorable inducements. Abraham Lincoln, acting as attorney for the board, drew up the bond guaranteeing the Bloomington citizens would fulfill their financial pledges. Illinois State Normal University was consequently founded as the first public institution of higher education in the state. Established as a teacher education institution, Illinois State has developed into a multipurpose university with degree programs at the bachelor’s, master’s, and doctoral levels. The University is one of 12 public universities in Illinois. Its 34 academic departments offer more than 188 fields of study in the Colleges of Applied Science and Technology, Arts and Sciences, Business, Education, and Fine Arts, and the Mennonite College of Nursing. The Graduate School coordinates 39 master’s, two specialist, and nine doctoral programs. The University’s academic programs are supported by the services and collections of Milner Library,
which contains more than 3 million holdings and special collections. The University enrolls students from throughout Illinois, 49 states, and 67 countries. Students are mentored by faculty members dedicated to superior teaching, including numerous teacher-scholars recognized at national and international levels for their research and contributions to their field. Conveniently located in Central Illinois, the University is situated at the intersection of three major highways, as well as along the Chicago-St. Louis railroad corridor. Due to its easy access in a region of strong economic growth and its multidimensional profile, Illinois State is able to respond to the varied needs and interests of its constituents and to contribute to the development of its students as responsible citizens.

The Department of Psychology celebrated Alumni Day 2026 with Alumni of the Year colloquia beginning with Dr. Drew H. Abney, Early Career Awardee, followed by Dr. Melissa Curran, Lifetime Achievement Awardee.

We thank all of the students, faculty/staff, family and friends who were in attendance for each of these talks, and we hope to see many of you back again next year for ISU Homecoming 2027 to celebrate Alumni Day with the Illinois State University Department of Psychology!

This board has several purposes, including assisting the department in achieving its mission, providing input on what employers view as critical skills in graduates, facilitating communication with alumni, serving as guest speakers and mentors, highlighting professional opportunities in psychology and related fields, promoting fundraising, planning and promoting alumni activities during homecoming and throughout the year, and helping to share our psychology stories.

We look forward to their continued work within the Department of Psychology in 2027, including ISU Homecoming 2027!

The Department of Psychology will celebrate the 60th anniversary of our founding as a department in the College of Arts and Sciences as part of Homecoming 2026.

The Department of Psychology was founded in 1966 as part of the College of Arts and Sciences. This was a monumental year for the University, as it grew from one to three colleges. There was much discussion about whether psychology should form its own department and, if so, whether it should remain part of the College of Education or join the new College of Arts and Sciences. In the end, the decision was made to join the College of Arts and Sciences.

The Department of Psychology will hold it's first Fifth Thursday Colloquium of the 2026-2027 academic year on Thursday, October 29th, at 3:30 p.m. in DeGarmo Hall 551 with Davi Lakind, Ph.D., who will present "The Accidental Labor Scholar: Attending to the Experiences and Perspectives of Community-Based Workforces to Support Youth and Families Impacted by Adversity".

Dr. Lakind is an assistant professor of clinical psychology at Northern Illinois University. She conducts community-engaged research, collaborating with partners to develop or enhance service models to support youth and families impacted by adversity and oppression and is interested in mental health promotion within everyday settings (e.g., schools, summer camp and afterschool programs, youth-serving nonprofit organizations), with an emphasis on extending meaningful support to families as well as supporting youth directly. Her focus is on the training, support and supervision that will allow an expanded community-based workforce to implement these practices effectively and experience their roles positively, and much of her research focuses on the experiences and perspectives of these workforces. This work is rooted in trauma-informed, culturally responsive, decolonial and abolitionist principles, which translates to an emphasis on compassion, care, dignity and autonomy for people both delivering and receiving services or support.
