What does the future of college athletics look like from the inside?

Honors students from The University of Oklahoma are getting an up-close look through the SEC Honors Athletics course, a collaboration among the honors colleges at 10 SEC universities exploring the changing landscape of college sports.

From NIL and revenue sharing to sports marketing, media rights and the evolving relationship between athletics and higher education, students are examining the issues shaping college athletics right now. The course also brings students and faculty from across the SEC together for guest lectures, discussions, facility visits and opportunities to build connections across the conference.

“It has been fascinating to observe the changes in college sports over the past few years,” said Kalenda Eaton, Ph.D., associate dean in the OU Honors College. “The relationship between college athletic teams and their impact on universities is being discussed across campuses in ways we have not seen in recent history.”

Seven OU instructors are participating in the course alongside SEC faculty, industry experts and athletics leaders.

As Paul Gilmore, Ph.D., dean of the OU Honors College, put it: “This class exemplifies the academic and athletic reach of the SEC and the valuable resources and partnerships it brings to the OU community.”
